GONE 11/28/17
Crystal
Hello, my name is Crystal. My animal id is #12729. I am a female gray dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 2 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 15-Nov-2017.
Crystal was placed at risk due to her behavior deteriorating at the care center and she will benefit from placement as soon as possible. Crystal is suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Crystal is a wiggle worm of a lady that isn’t doing well being in a cage. She came to the shelter as a stray, so we can’t speak of her past, but she has been super friendly and playful with her caretakers. She seems housebroken, eagerly sits for treats, LOVES toys, and our behavior department believes she can be placed in a home with well socialized dogs. Within minutes of meeting her she was in my lap and giving me kisses. Crystal is ready for her forever home for the holidays! Ask to meet her today!

Summary (1):: Crystal is uncomfortable around other dogs at first, but becomes somewhat social as she continues to participate in group. She tolerates most behavior but offers an appropriate correction when a male dog mounts her. Crystal was surrender as a stray so her past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Crystal be placed in a home with well socialized dogs that match her calm sociability. 11/16: When off leash at the Care Center, Crystal is uncomfortable with the male dogs greets. She tolerates his playful solicitations, but does not reciprocate. She spends most of her session panting, and exploring the pens. 11/18: Crystal is interested in a female dog’s genitalia area and persistently sniffs it. She eventually moves away and explores the area, occasionally checks in with the other dog. 11/21: Crystal offers an appropriate correction when a sexually motivated male mounts her. She spends the rest of hers session exploring the yard. 11/27: Crystal was introduced to a few small dogs today as a placement request. She initially was loose and wiggly when greeting them through the gate. When the gate was opened, she approached one of the small dogs slowly (her leash still being held loosely by a handler for safety reasons) and placed her mouth gently onto his body. The two were separated immediately.
Date of intake:: 11/15/2017
Summary:: No handling was done due to her behavior.
Date of initial:: 11/16/2017
Summary:: Very friendly, allows all handling
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: 11/21/17: Since arriving at the Care Center, Crystal has performed stress-induced repetitive behavior- incessantly jumping in the kennel and throwing her body against the walls. This behavior appears to only be seen when she is in her kennel and once outside she is inquisitive and social with her caretakers. This behavior poses a safety concern not only for her physical well-being but her mental welfare as well. The Behavior Team feels that Crystal should no longer be housed in a kennel environment and needs to leave the Care Center as soon as possible.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Potential challenges: : Kennel presence
Potential challenges comments:: While Crystal has been highly social and affectionate outside the kennel, she has shown high levels of stress inside the kennel leading to repetitive or stereotypical behaviors (see In-Shelter Observations). While we cannot be certain if this behavior will appear in any other contexts, in highly emotionally charged or stressful environments Crystal may show behavior similar to what she is currently demonstrating in her kennel. We recommend potential adopters be comfortable managing this behavior and keeping themselves safe in any similar future situations.
