02/17/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/17/17 20:33 On intake, counselor leashed Crotona and he walked out of the carrier nicely. He accepted treats that counselor dropped towards him. Counselor went to collar and he was fine but moved so she was unable to. The second time she tried, Crotona growled so counselor decided not to collar to not stress him out anymore.

02/22/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 2/17/17 Unaltered Male, Stray Other notes: Upon intake, Crotona growled and lunged and snapped at the medical handler. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 2/20/17 Summary: Crotona has displayed unpredictable and inconsistent behavior in the care center, seeming to be fine and then suddenly lunging and snapping at handlers without any apparent warning. He has allowed minimal handling from his caretakers. Out of concern for his stress levels and due to safety concerns, we feel Crotona is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: Introductions between Crotona and unfamiliar dogs should be conducted at a slow pace. Crotona may benenfit from decompression time in a new environment before immediate introduction to other dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 2/17/17 During his initial medical exam, Crotona was tense and fractious. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Crotona so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13): Due to the unpredictable behavior seen from Crotona at the care center, we recommend he be placed in a home without children. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Crotona has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. He has displayed very unpredictable behavior. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable, experienced, adult only, home environment before placement into a permanent home. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: An exaggerated response to stressful “novel” stimuli (the sight of other dogs/humans, direct touch, toy items, food items, etc.) which could potentially leave the Crotona living in a constant state of stress and agitation. Crotona’s low threshold for arousal rapidly escalates and quickly tips over to aggression from what has been observed in shelter. Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Tetris to new and unfamiliar situations. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Crotona display erratic behavior at the care center, he is seemingly fine and then lunges, snapping and growling, without any apparent warning. We recommend positive reinforcement training with the assistance of a certified trainer or behaviorist to modify this behavior.
02/25/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Introductions between Crotona and unfamiliar dogs should be conducted at a slow pace. Crotona may benenfit from decompression time in a new environment before immediate introduction to other dogs. 2/25: When off leash with a female dog Crotona persistently attempts to mount despite correction. He will, however, cease when he is solicited with play solicitation. 2/26: Crotona engages inplay, then attempts to mount when no longer engaging in play.
