Cream walked well on a leash into the admissions office. when he entered the office he sat while the owner and the counselor talked. After about 10 mins, Cream started to become aroused from all the barking in the kennels and jumped on his owner and licked his face. When removed he started to pull to look around the room and jump. Cream’s attention was redirected to a treat and he sat down and calmed down. He took the treat very gently from the counselors hand. He was difficult to collar because he would not hold still and struggled when held by his owner. It was eventually placed on him. His owner left and the counselor was able to get Cream to to for a photo by showing him a treat and saying”sit.” He held still and then gently took the treat. He pulled very hard on the leash when walking around the care center but he showed no behavior concerns during the admissions process.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Single-pet home,Recommend no dog parks,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: X_ Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Cream has shown during playgroup (see GROUPBEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Cream should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Cream associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats. New hope partner: Due to the warning and distance-increasing behaviors shown in the care center, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide force free behavior modification to address his underlying anxiety.
Potential challenges: : Social hyperarousal,Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Social hyperarousal: Dog has displayed low threshold for arousal, rapidly escalating (becomes frustrated, very anxious, head flips and attempts to exit the room.) Immediate intervention and consultation with a qualified veterinary behaviorist/professional trainer is strongly recommended to aid in addressing this issue to prevent further behavioral concerns that may appear in the future if not treated right away. We recommend only force-free, reward based training when introducing or exposing Cream to new and unfamiliar situations. Anxiety: Cream has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER. This behavior was not reported at intake, the owner profile does not note anxiety so we cannot be certain whether this behavior will continue in a future home, or whether it is specific to the shelter environment.
