08/08/2017 AT RISK MEMO
Cosmo A1120848 is at risk for concerns that he will not thrive in the kennel environment, surrounded by dogs. Cosmo has been reactive to other dogs on leash (lunging, barking, growling); this behavior has been amenable to modification but we feel Cosmo’s progress will be more rapid and he will have fewer opportunities to rehearse this behavior outside of the shelter environment. Please see In-Shelter Observations for additional details.

08/08/2017 WEB MEMO
A staff member writes: Well, well, well… What do we have here? Mr. Cosmo who is out of this world! This dog literally blew me away with his pearly whites and soft brown eyes. He was energetic and alert, almost as if something was missing. Then when I brought a football squeaky toy out, Cosmo flew to action! Touchdown!!! I found the way to Cosmo’s heart. He smized (smiled with his eyes) unexpectedly taking a piece of my heart. While he has a very interesting and unorthodox way of speaking to his canine colleagues, he is lovely with his human companion. Whoever his future human is will need to develop a strong relationship and bond so that when dogs come around Cosmo can think “Oh hi there!” versus “Get over here!” Will you be Cosmo’s football buddy and human who can change his world? You never know! Stop by MACC for a meet-n-greet with this out-of-this-world boy today!
08/06/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 8/4/17 Unaltered Male, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/6/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1/2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Cosmo appeared anxious during his assessment, panting and whining at times. He was social with the assessor and allowed all handling. PLAYGROUP: 8/5: Cosmo is muzzled for his first off leash interaction due to reported dog reactivity in the shelter. When introduced off leash to a female dog, Cosmo rushes forward and sniffs with stiff body. He continues to follow the dog sniffing with stiff body, he then becomes aroused and body checks and attempts to mount. At this time, the behavior department recommends a single dog residence for Cosmo due to the observed behavior around dogs both on and off leash. History around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Cosmo was barking, whining, and pacing appearing very anxious. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/4/17 During his initial medical exam, Cosmo was barking and whining but allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Cosmo so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: When Cosmo sees dogs, he will focus, pull forward, and hard-bark continuously while they are in his presence. After observed leash reactivity, Cosmo received Behavior Adjustment Training (BAT) for this reactivity here in the care center in a controlled environment. While Cosmo has responded well to the exercises provided to him, he is still reactive towards dogs on-leash. Despite the behavior team’s best efforts in implementing behavior modification protocol, it is unlikely Cosmo will thrive in this environment, and is more likely to respond better to these protocols in a consistent, stable home environment. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) Potential challenges: _X_Anxiety: Cosmo appears anxious in the care center, panting and whining. It is unknown if this behavior will occur in a home environment, but positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to work on any concerns that do appear. He should be given Kongs and puzzle toys to give him other things to do. _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center, Cosmo has been observed to react to other dogs on-leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling. Cosmo may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior. _X_Single pet home/no dog parks: See PLAYGROUP.

At this time, the behavior department recommends a single dog residence for Cosmo due to the observed behavior around dogs both on and off leash. History around dogs is unknown due to arriving as a stray. 8/8: Cosmo is muzzled for second interaction. He rushes in with a tense body, and circles around the female helper while posturing to mount.
