01/14/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None Unaltered male, stray Other notes: Upon intake Cornelius had a loose wiggly body, he seemed easily overstimulated and began to jump on the counselor. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 1/13/17 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is open for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft distracted. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy 1: No interest. Summary: Cornelius was alert and a bit distracted. He allowed all handling and was mellow. PLAYGROUP: Cornelius was surrender as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. When off leash at the Care Center, Cornelius displays soft body language when greeting the male and female dogs. He mounts both male and female dogs, persisting after the handlers interrupt and the other dogs offer correction. The Behavior Department recommends that Cornelius be placed in a home with dogs that are able to tolerate his mounting behavior. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 1/11/17 Cornelius allowed all handling during his initial medical examination. IN SHELTER BEHAVIOR: 1/17/17: When a deep clean of the Care Center was done, Cornelius was placed into a appropriately sized pop-up crate for an hour. While in the pop-up crate Cornelius pulled the bars with his teeth and damaged the crate. The Behavior Department feels that due to this reaction, appropriate desensitization and counterconditioning protocols need to be utilized in order for him to develop a positive association to his crate if his new owner wishes to crate train him. RECOMMENDATIONS: Average (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience) _x_Recommend no dog parks (Due to Cornelius’s persistent mounting of male and female dogs, and the propensity for this behavior to not be received well by other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that Cornelius initially not be taken to dog parks until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed in a more controlled setting. He should be given adequate time to decompress from the shelter environment.)
