The scuffle was reported to have lasted about 30 seconds, and did not result in any physical injury. No further detail was given. Behavior toward cats: Pulls toward, attempts to chase. Has bitten a cat encountered during a walk, see bite history below. Bite history: Yes. Corbin was involved in an incident with a stray cat encountered during a walk. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. His body is between you and the toy, and he is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Corbin displayed no concerning behaviors on his assessment and was social throughout. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Corbin had a loose, wiggly body and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/13/17 During his initial medical exam, Corbin was social, active and enjoyed handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have limited history on Corbin so we cannot be completely certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm.
PLAYGROUP: Corbin is social and highly playful when engaging with dogs in the care center. At times, Corbin does begin to display a concerning level of over arousal when interacting with dogs who engage in running, chase styles of play (becomes tense, runs after, mouths at the neck and ankles). Corbin has additionally displayed behaviors rooted in prey drive, attempting to run and chase after smaller animals. His previous adopters have reported an incident involving Corbin chasing after and successfully biting a cat encountered outdoors. The previous adopters of Corbin have also reported an altercation that occurred with a dog in the park, with no further detail. The behavior department advises against introducing Corbin to smaller dogs or other small animals. Introductions between Corbin and other large dogs should be conducted slowly and on a one on one basis, to tolerant dogs, or to social dogs who engage in a similar style of wrestling, body contact play. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No cats/no small dogs: Due to observed prey-driven behavior around small animals, Corbin should be kept away from cats, small dogs, and other small pets due to potential risk of injury. Corbin does have a bite history, involving an encounter with a stray cat on the street. _X_Recommend no dog parks: Dog parks are not recommended, due to the potential displayed for Corbin to become overly aroused when exposed to dogs who are smaller, or those who engage in running play. See PLAYGROUP for more information. _X_New Hope Only: Due to Corbin’s bite history, we recommend placement with a rescue partner who can assess his behavior in a stable environment before placement into a permanent adoptive home. Potential challenges: _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: Corbin may display concerning, prey-driven behavior when encountering cats and smaller animals during walks. Corbin has attempted to chase, and has successfully bitten a smaller animal (cat) while out on a walk. We recommend that future caretakers of Corbin exercise caution when walking Corbin through high traffic areas. Corbin may need to be muzzled for the safety of smaller animals during walks. He may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach him to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle him. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
