Cookie
Hello, my name is Cookie. My animal id is #17029. I am a desexed female brown brindle dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 6 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 27-Dec-2017, with the surrender reason stated as animal behaviour – aggressive towards people.
Cookie is at risk for behavior challenges (New Hope Only determination). She has allowed minimal handling the care center, quickly escalating to warning behaviors (growling, lunging) that have made it difficult to remove her from her kennel.
My medical notes are…
Weight: 84.2 lbs

Summary:: Cookie is difficult to remove from the kennel, lunging and snapping at the leash. Cookie was unable to be collared for any playgroup sessions. She appears to be uncomfortable or afraid of the slip lead. She has also allowed minimal handling from her caretakers. Out of concern for her stress levels and her response to restraint, we feel Cookie is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: According to Cookie’s previous owner, Cookie tends to bark and snap at dogs when she sees them close by. 12/28: Cookie was uncomfortable with handling, giving the handler a clear warning with look aways while displaying a tense posture, when an attempt was made to place a collar on her. Her warning was respected and attempts to place a collar on her were suspended. She displayed a neutral posture when greeting the other dog at the gate.
Date of intake:: 12/27/2017
Summary:: No handling was done during intake due to behavior.
Date of initial:: 12/28/2017
Summary:: Lunging, tries to bite-limited exam
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No cats,Single-pet home,Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Single-pet home: Place with new hope partner: While Cookie’s previous owner describes an affectionate, playful dog, she is not thriving in the shelter environment and has had a hard time with handling in the care center. She has generally given clear and protracted warnings and has not escalated to threatening behavior, but we are concerned that extra pressure may elicit higher level warnings (Biting). We feel that placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification guidance in a stable home environment will best set Cookie up for success in a future adoptive home. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods as more aversive techniques will time.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Cookie has shown some escalated warning behaviors in the care center. It is important to make sure Cookie stays under threshold and is not pushed to escalate further to a bite.
