A volunteer writes: Curled up in a tight little ball on her bed, Connie watched me unlatch her door, stepped up and let me leash her easily. We head outside where she goes potty immediately and we go for a short walk. Heading then into the back yard, Connie acknowledges other dogs in their kennels, and once off leash, plays with a ball and a toy. I invite Connie to play tug, and she’s happy to play with me. Grabbing her end of the toy, we tug and she wins!!! ( I let her win, but don’t tell her that.) Connie has been a mom a few times, and while her coat gleams, she may not have led the life of a pampered pet, perhaps used more for breeding. She can be a bit skittish with loud noises and sudden movements, but she definitely knows how and loves to play. As we walked back into the building, a staffer was eating some pizza, and Connie cutely walked over and sat beside him–she didn’t beg, but looked up silently as if willing a piece of pizza to fall her way! So cute! Connie is looking for a home where her need for quiet time, structure and love is understood. We can only guess at her life before joining us, but can guarantee her a good life moving forward with a person who knows how to let her find her way on her own timetable. As sudden movements and loud noises are making her uncomfortable at this point, it’s recommended that she not go into a home with children. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for Connie, as she’s young, and deserves to know what love is.

05/30/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY

Connie came into our center after police officers found her tied to a pole. Connie flinched upon intake when staff attempted to pet her head, relaxed if pet on her back. Connie whined upon entering the SAFER assessment room, focused on the exit. Once positioned, she held gaze for three full seconds, slight wagging tail. She leaned away from assessor during Sensitivity item, lip lick, body a bit tense. Connie became uncomfortable during Tag game, jumped up/vocalized and tried to bite, but settled easily at end of game. Due to this behavior the remaining tactile items were skipped. Connie playfully engaged with Toy, kept a firm grip with a loose body. When off leash with other dogs Connie greets briefly but is tense throughout the interaction. She occasionally seeks attention from handlers but is spooked by loud noises in the yard. Connie must be placed with a New Hope partner. Due to her discomfort with quick movements and loud noises, we recommend a home without children. Connie would benefit best with a calm, quiet, structured environment so Connie can relax and warm up in her new home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze, slight wagging tail. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans away and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, her tail is between her legs, body tense, mouth closed, lip lick. Tag: 5. Dog jumps/vocalizes, tries to bite. Toy 1. Dog playfully engaged, keeps a firm grip, body loose

Connie has been mostly uncomfortale interaction. The behavior department recommends allowing Connie time to acclimate in a new home before following up on behavior with other dogs. She arrived as a stray so in home behavior with dogs is unknown. When off leash with other dogs Connie greets briefly but is tense throughout the interaction. She occasionally seeks attention from handlers but is spooked by loud noises in the yard. 5/29 update: Connie is a bit tense, becomes more neutral bodied over time while exploring the yard. She places her paws on the helepr dog’s back when approached. 5/31 update: Connie is uncomfortable with approach. She offers a few paw slaps and bows. 6/1 update: Connie offers bows and begins to solicit chase play.
