07/05/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Fun, friendly, playful, and throw in gorgeous, and Mr. Columbo is a puppy you’ll want to meet. He’s a big boy, all puppy playful, and clearly doesn’t know how big he is. A little positive reinforcement training will teach him not to jump, but when he wags his tail and offers up a huge smile, your heart will melt. It was a hot, steamy day as we walked to the park, Columbo going potty as soon as we were out the door, and doing a little hopping in his happiness to be out. Columbo joined us when his people moved where he wasn’t welcome, and he comes with a lovely resume of a fun, friendly boy. He lived with two cats with whom he was respectful and tolerant, doesn’t guard his things, doesn’t mind a bath, is well behaved when left home alone, is active, and friendly to all. In the park, Columbo drank some water from the fountain, and then lay down froggy style as we got to know one another. Angling himself close to nuzzle me for some petting, we sat like two old friends watching the world go by. Columbo is gentle taking treats, loves wagging his tail as we chat about world events. He’s an awesome big puppy who, while he probably won’t grow in physical size any more, is ready to grow in every other way with a new person or family to lead the way. He’s looking for love and structure, and we know he’ll find it with you.
Another volunteer writes: I love when staff takes out their favorite dogs, and Columbo is a staff favorite (mine too). I’m told he loves to play in the pool, laying down when he gets too hot. Of course, when I wanted to film it, he didn’t do it, but each time I threw a toy into the pool he hopped right in to fish it out. His little tail wags at the fun and the attention, alternating his pool dunks with coming over for some love. He’s gorgeous, fun and playful, looking for his new home with people who will love and cherish him forever.
07/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 7/1/17 Unaltered Male, Owner Surrender (In previous home for ten months) Previously lived with: Adults and two cats Behavior toward strangers: Friendly Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Plays at dog parks Behavior toward cats: Respectful and tolerant Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Columbo is described as having a very high activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/3/17 Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up on and mouths assessor. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog quickly pulls back. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Columbo displayed a very high level of activity and movement on his assessment. He jumped up on the assessor repeatedly and was in constant movement. He was also very mouthy, using moderate pressure. PLAYGROUP: The former owner of Columbo cites that he has previously interacted playfully with dogs in a dog park setting. In the care center, Columbo has interacted playfully with female dogs, and has not yet beeni ntroduced to males. The behavior department recommends slow future introductions between Columbo and social dogs. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Columbo had a loose body and was jumpy and mouthy. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/2/17 During his initial medical exam, Columbo was overexcited, social, and mouthy. ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owners describe Columbo as a high-energy dog. In the care center, he has been active and enthusiastic. He may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when he becomes overstimulated. He will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help him to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No children (under 13): Due to how mouthy and jumpy Columbo is, we recommend an adult only home. Potential challenges: _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_Social hyper-arousal: Columbo became quickly over aroused during tag, jumping up high and leash biting. We recommend positive reinforcement, force free training to teach Columbo to remain calm in the presence of excitement by rewarding him for calm behavior. If she becomes overstimulated, people should walk away from him. _X_Strength/leash pulling: Columbo is a very large, strong dog with the capability to pull over an average adopter. His adopter must be prepared and able to handle a dog of this size and strength. It is recommended that he be walked on a front clip harness or head halter, which help diminish his strength through leverage, and that he be trained using positive reinforcement, reward based training to not pull on leash.
