02/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A staff member writes: Meet Colby! This handsome boy is a huge ball of energy! He is excited about life and greets everyone with a wagging tail and wiggly body. Colby is a high energy, exuberant boy, so he needs an adopter who can match his excitement! If you’d like to meet Colby, hurry on down to our Brooklyn Care Center today! A volunteer writes: (written as a personal ad) BE MY VALENTINE!! <3 If you’re looking for a guy who isn’t going to want to sit on the couch on a sunny day, look no further, I am your perfect boyfriend material! It doesn’t take much for me to get excited, a fun toy, a friendly face, snow-all things that get my motor running! Though I am friendly toward all, I can get a bit mouthy-it’s hard to contain my excitement and I haven’t quite learned appropriate ways to express my love…yet! AKA: Colby Cheese Age: 2 years old Zodiac Sign: Aries Favorites: Things I love in no particular order: Giving hugs! Who doesn’t love a big furry puppy wrapping his paws around you?! Toys! If I had to choose, toys that squeak are preferred. I’ll bat them, carry them around in my mouth and treasure them just about as much as I’d treasure you! If you want to see me smile, give me a squeaky ball. Food! Good treats motivate me and make me highly trainable! ISO (In search of): A companion who is game for outdoor activities: running, hiking, swimming, or pretty much anything outside. Someone who can help teach me basic obedience and manners and who has the patience for a dog who has a bunch of energy that is tough to contain! If you have the same zest for life and open air activities like I do, come to the Brooklyn Care Center and ask to meet me today!
01/26/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Colby came to us as a stray, so we don’t have any behavior information prior to what has been observed while at the shelter. Colby was initially calm and relaxed when entering the behavior room and was interested in exploring his environment. Once the assessor went to begin the assessment Colby began to become very aroused and difficult to position for most of the handling items. Also, Colby began to constantly attempt to mouth the leash and did not de-escalate during the entire assessment. Though very hard to position and handle on leash, Colby never displayed any signs of aggression. During the tag interaction Colby was initially distracted my objects in the behavior room, but did follow the assessor at the end of the item and again began to mouth the leash. As the assessor attempted to conduct both the squeeze and flank items Colby seemed to become very distressed and began to flail his body strongly, so in an effort to decrease stress levels these items were not able to be performed. When engaged with the toy item during Colby took the toy with a firm grip and loose body language. Due to the behavior observed while in the shelter the behavior department believes that Colby will be best suited for an adopter with no young children that has experience with very high energy dogs and can supply the behavior modification needed to manage this behavior in a stable home. Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs his shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity: 2. Dog repeatedly turns toward the Assessor’s hand, with loose body and open mouth. Tag: 3. Dog is initially focused on stimuli other than the Assessor, put begins to mouth the leash near the end of the assessment and does not calm easily. Intervention is needed to redirect to more appropriate behaviors. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog begins to flail and dip his body when the Assessor attempts to conduct the item, but is unable to hold the paw. Flank 1: 3. Dog begins to flail and dip his body, the Assessor is unable to conduct the item. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. When off leash with other dogs, Colby greets the other dog with a stiff posture. He does not engage in play but is rather sexually motivated.
