08/26/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
08/26/16 14:01 Basic Info: Coffee A1087341 is a 10month old male white AM Staff mix who was bought off of a friend selling puppies & is being surrendered due to him being too hyper and overwhelming for the owner. Coffee was last seen by a veterinarian a few wks ago and just finished a week’s worth of allergy medication. Socialization: Around strangers Coffee is very friendly/outgoing. He hasn’t lived with other animals or children but was gentle, exuberant, very playful & somewhat rough with (during play he doesn’t know his strength) the dogs at the dog park and with the adult in the home. Coffee hasn’t bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: Coffee is a very hyper & excited boy. During storms/fireworks he’ll bark. Coffee isn’t bothered by the following: having his food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved. Coffee hasn’t been brushed, had his nails trimmed or been disturbed while sleeping/resting. During baths Coffee attempts to jump out the tub sometimes. If someone approaches the home/family member he’ll excitedly bark & jumps on them to greet them & play. For A New Family to Know: Coffee is very friendly, affectionate, very playful, confident, & excitable with a very high activity level. The owner likes how friendly he is. Coffee enjoys playing with ball, squeaky, rope toys and games of fetch & tug. He’s mostly an indoor only dog who sleeps on linen & is walked 2-3x a day where he pulls strongly on his leash at times. Coffee eats dry dog Pedigree food 2x a day. Coffee’s known commands are “sit”, “stay” & “come” that he doesn’t always listen to. He is partially house broken (he’s still learning). Intake Behavior: Coffee allowed all handling. He was very wiggly and seemed to enjoy hugs and being on your lap. Coffee allowed to be scanned (-), collared & taken pictures of and was then coaxed into his kennel.
08/30/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I saw Coffee coming out of the van. “This is a very nice dog”, said the driver. Still, Coffee was surrendered for being too active and too strong…although his former owner confessed: “I like how friendly he is!”. Many dogs are too powerful for me, but the same dogs are a piece of cake for other volunteers. So, that flaw of Coffee is really a tiny one. I liked Coffee the moment I laid eyes on him. Handsome, attractive and well, that smile. I leashed him easily and at first, he took me for a ride until, after lots of sniffing, he did his full business. In the park, Coffee, a big nine month old puppy, walked really nicely. He met with a wagging tail other pooches big and small, hinted at chasing a squirrel but then thought better. He answered the many compliments he got with bright eyes and a big Pittie smile. He ended up on my lap and I can say that he can enter a competition for the best hugger, kisser and snuggler. I will add that Coffee was very gentle with me and not at all overbearing. Coffee was bought as a tiny puppy and comes with lovely comments beside being too energetic for his former owner. He would not be completely house trained yet, but he is on the way. Coffee is a GOOD babe with a heart and who needs puppy general and obedience training, an active person or family, and he will be an amazing adult! Come and meet him soon at the Manhattan Care Center. Make him your star forever best friend!
08/28/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Coffee came to the care center as on owner surrender on 8/26/16. His behavior with children and cats is unknown. Owner reported that he played somewhat rough with dogs at the dog park and that he is not bothered if his food or treats are touched. Coffee’s owner described him as very friendly, affectionate, very playful, confident, and excitable with a very high activity level. It is reported he knows the cues sit, stay, and come. Upon intake, Coffee allowed all handling and was very wiggly. For his relief walk, Coffee pulled slightly. He was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room. Coffee displayed high energy and movement throughout entire assessment, but allowed handling. His eyes were averted during Look item, body soft. Coffee leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, mouth open. He followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, soft and a bit distracted. Coffee mouthed assessor’s hand during both Squeeze attempts, no pressure. He showed minimal interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment as owner reports he enjoys playing with balls, squeaky toy, rope toys, and games of fetch and tug. When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Coffee engages in rough play. The Behavior Team feels Coffee would do best with an Experienced adopter that is prepared to provide him with daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of walks, runs, exercise, and play to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft Squeeze 1 / 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure. Toy: 1. Minimal interest. Dog-dog: When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Coffee engages in rough play.
08/27/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When introduced off leash to another dog in the care center, Coffee engages in rough play. He attempts to mount the female greeter when play slows down (Coffee is currently unaltered). His previous owner describes him as “very playful & somewhat rough with (during play he doesn’t know his strength) the dogs at the dog park”. There is no history available on how he behaves in-home with other dogs. The behavior team feels that Coffee could potentially be adopted to a home with another dog pending a successful pre adoption interaction.
