07/30/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
7/30/16 17:05 Basic information: Cody is a roughly 1 yr. old Am Pit Bull mix. The Owner got her from a family member as a gift; he has owned Cody for over a year. The owner surrendered Cody because the owner’s landlord no longer wants the dog in the building Cody has never been taken to a vet. Socialization: Around strangers Cody is friendly playful. Cody has not lived with children but he is relaxed and playful around children and adults he does not know. He has never been around other pets so the owner has no idea how Cody would behave around them. Cody has never bitten anyone. Behavior: The owner stats that Cody is not bothered when some moves his food or treats while he is eating, when someone takes his toys away or when someone disturbs him while sleeping. Cody likes to be brushed and given bathes but has never had his nails trimmed. When an unfamiliar person or animal approaches a family member or his home he approaches them in a friendly manor. The owner does not know how Cody is around loud noises such as storms or fireworks. For a new family to know: The owner describes Cody as friendly, affectionate and playful with a high activity level. His favorite activity is to play fetch with his owner. In the home Cody tends to follow the owner around the house and is kept mainly indoors. Cody sleeps in the floor of the bedroom on a dog bed. Cody was fed Pedigree dry and wet dog food three times a day. He is house trained and has never had an accident in the home, when outside he goes to the bathroom on or around trees and grass. Cody knows the commands “sit “and “down”. For exercise Cody is used to brisk walks on the leash and twice a day and does pull on the leash when excited. Behavior during intake: Cody was relaxed with lose body. Cody allowed to be scanned (+), collared and placed in dog kennel.
08/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Cody may seem a bit sad in his den, but don’t fret, those cute forehead wrinkles only look like worry lines. Leash him up for a toddle through the park and you’ll soon see they’re just smile lines in disguise! No one loves getting out and about more than Cody, and he pulls eagerly as we make our way down the street, veering slightly to sneak a sniff of each passerby and softly wagging his tail in greeting when we meet other dogs of all shapes and sizes. Taking care of his bathroom break almost immediately, Cody is said to be very house trained, and he certainly seems to be, based on sheer volume alone! He knows commands for ‘down’ and ‘sit’ and is happy to show them off for me, but when I offer some chicken treats they’re politely refused, as he makes it clear he’d much rather get back to our walk instead. This is no time for a treat break, lady, there are smells out there still waiting to be snuffled! He’s not into modeling for the camera either, but never gets upset or pushy with me, and endures our long shoot with such gentle manners it’s no surprise to read that despite not living with kids, he’s always relaxed and playful when they come for a visit. Described by his former owner as friendly, affectionate and playful with a high activity level, Cody’s always happy to share his food or toys, enjoys being brushed, and has no problem taking a bath either. While he’s been a bit shy around all the new people and dogs he’s met at the Care Center, I’ve no doubt that the ‘old’ Cody would come out to play once he’s had time to settle down in a brand new forever home. The sooner he can get started on that settling in, the better. So why not make a date with this red-headed honey today? Cody can’t wait to go for a walk with you!
08/02/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cody is fearful of the shelter environment he walks with a low and fearful body language. He was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body and tail, but trying to stay close. Cody had a low body position during the tag test, but followed the assessor at the end of the leash. He was not interested in toys. Cody was surrender to us. According to his previous owner around strangers Cody is friendly playful. Cody has not lived with children but he is relaxed and playful around children and adults he does not know. He has never been around other pets. The owner states that Cody is not bothered when someone moves his food or treats while he is eating or when someone takes his toys away. The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Cody is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. Cody has been showing fearful behavior and avoids interaction in the care center. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Cody is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, shy body language, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1. No interest. 8/9 update: Cody has exhibited fearful behaviors in his kennel. When he arrived at the care center he was hiding in the back and has now escalated to growling and lunging at lingering people in front of his kennel. He is not thriving in the shelter environment, we recommend that Cody move into a stable home environment as quickly as possible.
08/02/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash with other dogs, Cody is fearful in his enivornment, and tucks away when approached at first. Cody appears more comfortable approaching to sniff/investigate the helper dog when her back is turned. When the helper dog approaches Cody face to face, he offers a low growl. Previous owner cites that he has never been around other pets so the owner has no idea how Cody would behave around them. The behavior team feels that Cody may be most comfortable acclimating to life outside the shelter as the only resident dog before follow up on his behavior around them.
