04/18/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: The all-American boy. To me, Cody looks like he should be playing the starring role in a Purina commercial. Wrapped in a beautiful, fawn coat with one white star across his chest, I can so easily picture Cody emerging from a pond, grinning ear-to-ear, and heading into a slooooow-motion shake shake shake! while a joyful soundtrack plays over him. He is incredibly handsome, if a bit too lean (he could use a few extra scoops of that Purina) with his button nose, floppy ears, and tail that goes on for days. Found as a stray along with his housemate Kelly, Cody may look the part of a television star but right now – he’s not quite as confident. At 5 years-old Cody is past his puppyhood. He’s lived enough of a life to know who he is, what he loves, what he could do without, and most importantly, who his friends are. Now finding himself in a new, uncertain environment, Cody isn’t so sure about that last bit. On our first meeting he was quiet and calm in his kennel. I leashed him easily and he padded out in front of me on our way to the park, not too far but not too close. He looked back at me often, “is she still there?” “where are we going?” “is she a friend?” Free in a pen he thoroughly sniffed his surroundings still keeping one eye on me at all times. I so desperately wanted to snuggle against that gorgeous, fawn coat, rub those floppy ears, but today was on Cody’s terms and he would come when ready. Finally, at long last, after one more prolonged look, he slowly crossed to my bench, purposefully standing just close enough where those ears were in reach. As I rubbed one gently he shook shook shook! and I could see some of the uncertainty fall away from him. Yes, Cody had made a new friend today. The first of many. Cody is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
