07/01/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/01/17 18:45 Basic: Coconut, or Coco for short, is a 2 yr old large female dog. Her owners have had her for 2 yrs she has not had any injuries or health problems since she has been with them. She was last seen by a vet 1 yr ago for vaccines. Socialization: Around strangers Coconut is very friendly and outgoing. She has spent time with children in the home, toddlers and teenagers and is very playful and relaxed with them. She plays exuberantly with adults and children. She has never lived with another dog, but when at the dogpark she is relaxed and plays exuberantly. She has spent time in the home with two cats. Coconut was, for the most part, relaxed with them. She does not have a bite history. Behavior: Coconut is well behaved at home. She has bathroom accidents a few times per month if she is not walked when she is supposed to be. If you leave any food lying around, she will think it’s hers. She gets nervous during loud noises. She isnt bothered when someone touches her or her food while she is eating, takes a toy or a treat out of her mouth, pushes off furniture, holds her, disturbs her while resting, touches her feet. She isnt bothered by baths, but if she gets the chance, she will hop out of the tub. She will bark when there is noise outside her home’s front door. She isnt bothered when someone unfamiliar approaches her family member while out on a walk. For New Family: Coconut is friendly, affectionate and playful. Her activity level is high and her owners love how affectionate she is and how she will nudge them to pet her. She loves to run for exercise and play tug with a rope toy. She will follow her owners around the house, and always be in the same room as them. She plays with chew bones, rope toys, balls, and squeaky stuffed toys. She is kept mostly indoors and sleeps on her dog bed which is in her owner’s bedroom. She eats Pedigree wet&dry grain free food and loves peanut butter as a snack. She likes to go outside on the cement and is mostly housetrained. She is well behaved when left alone but will chew on things such as shoes, if she is not exercised enough. She knows “sit, come, and stay”. She pulls lightly on the leash and when off leash will keep her distance and is hard to catch. She loves to run at the off leash dog park. During intake Coco had polite and friendly body language and also rolled onto her back for belly rubs. The counselor was able to collar and handle.

A volunteer writes: “You put the lime in the coconut…” Except you don’t need a lime or any other sort of citrusy garnish to enjoy this delicious beauty. 2 year-old Coconut (Coco for short) is just as decadent and sweet as one of summer’s favorite treats in her shiny, chocolate coat. And ears! Those batty beauties set me to smiling straight away, and that’s even before she first flashed me her own beaming, pearly whites. Coconut and I met on a moody, summer’s day–one where the sky couldn’t seem to decide on whether to rain or shine. But what does it matter when you’re in this good of company? As we waited out the rain, Coconut followed me everywhere I went, eventually happily and calmly sitting at my side in the crowded and bustling hall as we watched the raindrops fall. Eventually the sun emerged and off for fun we went. Coconut walked beautifully on leash, sat for her treats, took them gently, and appeared to be housebroken. “What a pretty girl!” a passing admirer commented. And it’s true that while Coconut does have brains to match her beauty, her Lab-y good looks are impossible to ignore. “Doctor, ain’t there nothin’ I can take?” To relieve a belly ache — or a case of the Mondays, a bout with the blues, or just to make a great day even greater — take one look at Coconut and then call me in the morning. Coconut is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan ACC.
07/03/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: Full Profile 7/1/17 Unaltered Female, Owner Surrender (In previous home for two years) Previously lived with: Adults, children, and two cats Behavior toward strangers: Friendly and outgoing Behavior toward children: Playful and relaxed Behavior toward dogs: Relaxed and playful at the dog park Behavior toward cats: Relaxed Resource guarding: None reported Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Mostly, has accidents when not walked on schedule Energy level/descriptors: Coconut is described as friendly, affectionate, and playful with a high activity level. SAFER ASSESSMENT: 7/3/17 Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, closed mouth. Tag: 3. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps up high and leash bites. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness. Summary: Coconut was social throughout her assessment and allowed all handling. During tag, she became quickly overstimulated, jumping up high and grabbing the leash. It took her a minute to settle. PLAYGROUP: Coconut has displayed conflicted behavior when interacting with dogs in the care center. She has displayed interest in play, though not always comfortable with interaction. The previous owner of Coconut cites that she displayed “relaxed and playful” behavior at dog parks. The behavior department recommends slow introductions between Coconut and respectful, social dogs, allowing time for her to become comfortable at her own pace. INTAKE BEHAVIOR Upon intake, Coconut was social. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 7/2/17 During her initial medical exam, Coconut appeared social but became tense with restraint. She allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL: Her previous owners describe Coconut as a high-energy dog. In the care center, she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to how quickly Coconut becomes over aroused, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable with large, jumpy dogs should have an interaction prior to adoption. Potential challenges: _X_Social hyper-arousal: Coconut became quickly over aroused during tag, jumping up high and leash biting. We recommend positive reinforcement, force free training to teach Coconut to remain calm in the presence of excitement by rewarding her for calm behavior. If she becomes overstimulated, people should walk away from her.

She repeats this behavior when approached, though each time becomes less tense. 7/6: Coconut initially displays some tense body language, becomes more relaxed through the interaction.
