A volunteer writes: Cocoa Puff is the perfect name for this magnificent, chocolate boy. If there’s a more stunning coat out there I’ve not yet seen it. Cocoa Puff (or CP as I call him) is like a warm mug of sugary sweetness on the most blustery of days. All that’s missing is the marshmallow. CP came under our care as a stray so, unfortunately, his previous life is a mystery. Such a shame as I would so love to know what this 2 year-old stunner has lived and seen. He is a bit mysterious himself, reserved, serious, and calm. When we first meet he is quiet in his kennel, silently regarding me with those golden eyes. He’s easily leashed and we’re soon off. CP pulls a bit (as many strong, silent types do) but it’s nothing my puny arms can’t handle, and soon we’re enjoying free time in a pen. I try and tempt him with toys but that’s child’s play to our studious boy. He instead roams the pen “studying” every nook before returning to my side to see what’s next on our agenda. Treats? And suddenly, our cup of cocoa perks (percolates?) right up. Yes, the key to this sweetheart is sweets, or maybe savories. He happily gobbles down my offerings, lightly skimming the palm of my hand with his muzzle. And then he’s off again for more exploring, and I’m left to admire him and that coat as the sun makes it shine. Summer may be approaching but a warm cup of cocoa is always in style. Cocoa Puff is waiting to meet you at Manhattan’s ACC.
05/17/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cocoa Puff pulls hard on the leash. He became uncomfortable with handling; he stands tall, and tries to look large. Cocoa Puff wrinkles his muzzle to expose his front teeth and preparing to lunge forward. The behavior team decided to skip the handling part of the assessment for safety reasons. During the resources Cocoa Puff was not interested in toys. The behavior department feels that he would do best if placed with a New Hope partner who can follow up on this behavior in a more stable environment and can provide any necessary behavior modification before placement into a permanent home. Look: 5. tries to bite. Toy 1: No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Cocoa Puff approaches and greets politely, then attempts to mount. He responds well to handler interruption for mounting, ceases and then roams the pen.
05/16/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Cocoa Puff has had limited interaction off leash with other dogs, only displaying brief interest, and a bit of sexually motivated behavior. The behavior department recommends focusing on allowing Cocoa Puff time to decompress and acclimate to a new environment before following up on behavior with other dogs outside the shelter. He arrived as a stray so in home behaviors with dogs are unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Cocoa Puff approaches and greets politely, then attempts to mount. He responds well to handler interruption for mounting, ceases and then roams the pen. 5/17 update: Cocoa Puff is sexually motivated, but take correction. 5/18 update: Cocoa Puff offers a few sniffs, then roams the pen.
