08/27/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Cocoa is the biggest, most beautiful (!!!), and most bashful puppy I’ve ever met! Her former owner tells us she is very shy and fearful with strangers, but affectionate with her family. She has lived harmoniously with a teenager (her tail was always wagging as she followed him around the house!), loves to play with toys (she’s been too nervous to play with them with me, but I have caught her tossing them around in the safety of her cage…adorable!), and will need work on her housetraining. Although very scared, the good news is she’s not too scared to take treats from new people and with enough of them she’ll learn that new people can become old friends! She knows basic commands and often slowly bats her paw at me before I can even ask for it. After spending just a little bit of time with her she has warmed up to softly wag her tail when I approach her cage and even very briefly prop her paws up on me. She is really a sweetheart and is looking for someone to help her gain confidence, show her lots of love, and watch her grow old…please come see her at Brooklyn ACC!

Summary: Cocoa was tense throughout the assessment; though she allowed all handling she was wary and fearful. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Cocoa is initially nervous, but begins to warm up as the sessions continue. She solicits gentle bouncy play, but becomes overwhelm when her solicitations are reciprocated. According to Cocoa’s owner, Cocoa did not socialize with other dogs outside of the Care Center. The Behavior Department recommends that Cocoa is to be placed in a home with well socialized resident dogs that match her gentle play style. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/18/17 Cocoa was shy, and moved away when attempted to pet her. Her body was tense and she displayed whale eyes. She allowed being collard, scanned and photographed. She allowed a gentle and slowly approach. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/19/17 Cocoa displayed a low body posture, tail tucked, came out of cage and walked into room calmly, backed away from examiner. Soft muzzle placed for exam. Allowed all handling. Took of muzzle, allowed petting and ate well in front of examiner/handler ENERGY LEVEL: Her previous owner describes Cocoa as a fearful/calm dog. Cocoa displayed low energy and movement throughout assessment. Cocoa will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced adopter, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13)- Cocoa appeared tense throughout his assessment, though she tolerated handling. Coco has been extremely timid and hesitant to interact during his time at the care centers. This, in addition to her previous owner’s notes that she is frightened of and hides from children/strangers, causes us to feel that Cocoa will be most comfortable and most likely to thrive in an adult-only home. Potential challenges: _X_House soiling- Cocoa is reported to have frequent accidents in the house, and appears not to have been housetrained in the past. She will need guidance and consistency to learn to eliminate outside. We recommend crate training (the crate must be made positive and never used as a punishment), frequent walks, rewards for eliminating outside (treats, toys, games), consistent feeding schedule, and careful monitoring when inside. Accidents should never be punished as it can damage the human-dog relationship and is likely to make the problem worse. _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression-Cocoa displays a high level of fear at the care center. It is important to always go slow and give Cocoa the option to walk away from any social interaction. She should never be forced to approach anything that she is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. Reactivity towards other humans was noted by the previous owner (lunging). Because this appears to present a challenge outside of the care centers, guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly advised to assess this behavior and modify/manage as needed.
08/19/2017 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
When off leash at the Care Center, Cocoa is initially nervous, but begins to warm up as the sessions continue. She solicits gentle bouncy play, but becomes overwhelm when her solicitations are reciprocated. According to Cocoa’s owner, Cocoa did not socialize with other dogs outside of the Care Center. The Behavior Department recommends that Cocoa be placed in a home with well socialized resident dogs that match her gentle play style. 8/18: When off leash at the Care Center, Cocoa displays a nervous posture when greeting a novel male dog. As she explores her surroundings, she begins to warm up to the greeter, and occasionally check in with him. 8/20: Cocoa is nervous when meeting another female dog but does loosen up when play is solicited. She engages in brief bouts of play- bouncing and spinning. 8/22: In a group of gentle players, Cocoa attempts to engage in bouncy play, but becomes overwhelm when her solicitations are reciprocated. She tucks her tail and runs to the corner, before re-engaging the group. 8/23: Cocoa appeared much more confident, interacting socially in a playful group setting. She engages in running chase play and can be pushy-slamming her body on the other dogs- but responds well to handler interruptions.
