PROFILE:
Basic Information:
Coco is a 1 year old Chihuahua who was surrendered due to his previous owner getting evicted.
Socialization:
Around strangers Coco is friendly, outgoing and plays exuberantly with adults and children. Coco has spent time with children ages 4 to 5 years old and is relaxed/ playful around them. Coco has spent time with small dogs at the park and is usually shy around them at first and will warm up soon after. Coco has never been around cats so it is unknown how he will react to being around them.
Behavior:
Coco has never bitten another person or animal and has shown no behavior issues while at home. Coco is fearful or fireworks and gets nervous when he hear them. Coco is friendly when someone touches his food/bowl while he is eating, takes a treat/toy away, pushes/pulls him off of the furniture, holds/restrains him, disturbs him while he is resting/sleeping, or gives him a bath. Coco’s previous owner did not attempt to trim his nails so it is unknown how he will react to that event. If an unfamiliar person approaches Coco’s family/home he will bark at them.
For a new Family to know:
Coco is described as playful, shy, confident, mellow and excitable with a medium activity level. When at home Coco will follow around his owner and likes to play with all toys. Coco was kept indoors and was fed both wet and dry food. Coco is house trained and rarely has any accidents. Coco is well behaved when left at home alone and has never been crate trained. Coco likes slow and brisk walks on a leash and will run away when off leash.
Intake Behavior:
Coco growled and barked at staff when approached, Coco’s owner had to collar him and scan him for the microchip number.

Summary
INTAKE BEHAVIOR
5/31/17 Upon intake Coco growled and barked at staff when approached
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 5/31/17
During his initial medical exam, Coco was tense but allowed handling
ENERGY LEVEL:
His owner describes Coco as having a medium activity level which matches what we have seen in the care center.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially the behavior outlined below)
_X_No young children (under 5) – While Coco spent time with young children previously, he has shown interaction avoidance here in the care center and seems a bit uncomfortable with quick movements. He may be intimidated by young children and needs a slow approach to warm up. Coco should never be forced to interact with new people, or submit to petting or handling
Potential challenges:
_X_Handling/touch sensitivity – Coco became tense during up close tactile handling portions of his assessment, though shows good coping skills. He will do best with an adopter prepared to allow him to warm up to new people slowly
Group Behavior:
6/2: When off leash with other dogs, Coco will snap when greeted face to face.
