05/22/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
05/22/16 13:48 Basic Information Coco was brought in as an owner’s surrender due to having severe separation anxiety. Owner has had Coco for the past 2.5 years after receiving her as a gift. Coco’s anxiety causes her to severely scratch her ears when left alone. Socialization & Behavior Coco is described as being shy for the first few minutes when around strangers. She has spent time with children of all ages and owner says she is tolerant but not too social with them. She lived with a male German shepherd mix and owner says the two are very affectionate and loving with each other. Coco also lives with a male cat and owner says the two are playful. According to owner there have been no past issues of Coco biting anyone or another animal. Coco is unbothered if owner touches food, but says if the male dog she lives with touches her food she’ll thrash her head side to side first snap at him but never connects. She allows owner to remove items from her mouth as well as touch her possessions. She listens when told to get off of furniture and does not like baths but will deal. She runs away from nail trims. Coco is said to be calm but alert when someone unfamiliar approaches. For a New Family to Know Coco is described as friendly, anxious, and shy with a low activity level. When home she is normally following her owner, and enjoys playing tug with ropes. Coco was taken out twice a day, and owner says she never has accidents. Coco was normally fed Beneful dry food. Owner says she sometimes gets anxious when home alone and will begin to excessively scratch her ears, and occasionally use the bathroom somewhere in the home. Coco understands commands sit, stay, and come. Owner says she slightly pulls when on leash, and stays close to owner if let off leash. Behavior during Intake Coco was initially anxious during intake. She backed away from contact and tried to run from scanning. Coco remained calm when taken out for photo, and allowed petting. Coco sat when instructed to and allowed all handling to be conducted. Coco showed no signs of aggression during intake.
05/27/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Coco ‘s cute elfin face does not go incognito. Her lovely smile and tenderly squinting eyes make her even more charming. The cherry on top…she is quite small at 40 lbs and so nicely dressed in her tiger brindle robe. Coco, who is 4 years old and spayed, lived with the same family for 2 and a half years, mingling happily with children of all ages and her best friend, a German Shepherd. She seems to have been well cared for and his quite healthy except for a severe infection affecting her both ears and apparently untreated. Coco is described as friendly, affectionate, shy at first, anxious when left alone, playful and with a low activity level. She is definitely timid here at the care center, having lost her familiar premises and her loved ones. It does not take her long, though, to bond with her various caretakers and snuggle on a bench with them. She comes right away when called, sits beautifully on command and will wait on a chair for me to come and pet her. Coco is such an easy going gal, going with the flow. She even played dress up for Memorial Day in the yard. It is easy to tell that Coco loves the attention and human company. In playgroups with her peers, she is a little shy and prefers the company of the handlers. Coco is a delicious and petite gal, a family pooch who has proven herself with kids and other dogs. Her ear infection is already being treated at the care center. Coco is waiting for you at the Manhattan Care Center. She so would love to be your new best friend.
05/25/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Coco walks calmly on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Coco was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Coco was not interested in toys. Coco was surrender to us. According to her previous owner Coco is friendly, anxious, and shy with a low activity level. When home she is normally following her owner, and enjoys playing tug with ropes. She is shy around strangers and it would take couple of minutes for her to warm up. She has spent time with children of all ages and owner says she is tolerant but not too social with them. She lived with a male German shepherd mix and owner says the two are very affectionate and loving with each other. Coco also lives with a male cat and owner says the two are playful. Coco is unbothered if owner touches food, but says if the male dog she lives with touches her food she’ll snap at him but never connects”. The behavior department feels that she may do best with an experienced adopter. Coco is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Coco allows greeting. She briefly sniffs then wanders.
05/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Coco has been uncomfortable with other dogs while in the care center, typically offering only a brief greeting then avoiding or offering correction. She lived with a large, male dog and the owner reports “two are very affectionate and loving with each other.” It is also reported that when the other dog touches Coco’s food bowl she will ‘thrash her head side to side first snap at him but never connects.” The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction as well as addressing her potential guarding issues with the other dog and having a plan set in place to help modify these behaviors. When off leash with other dogs, Coco allows greeting. She briefly sniffs then wanders. 5/26 update: Coco is tense and moves away when sniffed. 5/27 update: Coco is tolerant of a brief greeting but will offer correction if mounted or solicited with play.
