06/26/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Coco came into our center as an owner surrender citing children in the home developing allergies. It is reported Coco has lived with several children varying in age from 16 months to 14 years, and a cat, got along great with everyone, relaxed and playful. Owner reports Coco is not bothered if anyone touches her Food, Toys, Treats, but may growl if another animal tries to take her food away. It is reported Coco is housetrained and well behaved when left alone in the home. Coco is described as friendly, affectionate and playful with a high activity level. Coco pulled on leash for her relief walk. She was friendly and sociable upon entering SAFER assessment room. Coco allowed her head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, eyes averted, body soft. She leaned in and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, body soft, open mouth. She followed at the end of the leash during Tag game, body soft. She gently pulled her paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Coco showed no interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment as owner reports she likes balls, stuffed animals, squeaky toys, and bones. When greeting a helper male on leash, Coco was very defensive. She did not allow him to greet her or smell her. She will often snap, bare teeth and growl. Due to Coco’s behavior with other dogs off leash we recommend Coco go to a home with an experienced owner as the only dog in the home at this time. Coco would benefit from daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play as well as durable toys such as kongs and nylabones to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog allows head to be cupped in assessor’s hands, eyes averted Sensitivity: 2. Dog leans in and accepts the touch, body soft, open mouth Tag: 1. 05/25/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Coco is tense on leash when she sees other dogs, and will lunge and bark when she gets close. She has only been muzzled for her off-leash interactions because she displays those same behaviors during each interaction. Coco’s owner cites that she is has been around other dogs and plays gently with them. However, based on observations seen in the care center, the behavior department recommends not placing Coco into another home until her behaviors can be followed up on. When greeting a helper male on leash, Coco was very defensive. She did not allow him to greet her or smell her. She will often snap, bare teeth and growl. There was no further interaction, both dogs were not off leash together and Coco was taken back inside. 6/28, Manhattan Shelter: Coco has been observed to become tense and lunge/bark toward dogs on leash outdoors and around the shelter. When greeting through a fence barrier, Coco is tense-bodied and displays a hard stare. Based on these observations, and observation made while in the Staten Island shelter, a muzzle is applied to Coco before allowing her off-leash in a pen. When off leash in a pen, Coco displays a tense body with raised hackles, ears foward, and a high, stiff tail. Coco makes repeated attempt to jump on the helper dog, body remaining tense, no vocalization heard. Coco is removed from the pen and the muzzle is not removed during this interaction. 6/29: Coco is muzzled once more, and continues to display a tense body when in the pen with the male greeter.
