Basic Information
Coco was brought in as an owner’s surrender. Owner has had Coco since about 2009, after receiving him from his previous owner. Coco has a reoccurring cough but otherwise has no injuries or health concerns.
Socialization & Behavior
Coco is said to be initially shy around strangers, but soon warms up after a few minutes. Coco has lived with other small breed dogs and owner says he is playful and comfortable with them. Coco is trained to use the bathroom outside and never has accidents. Coco is described as mellow and affectionate with a medium activity level. According to owner there have been no past issues of Coco biting anyone or another animal. Coco is said to be unbothered if food is touched while eating, and will normally wait for owner before continuing. He is friendly when removed from furniture, and does not like baths but will deal with them. Coco is unbothered with being held, and will just wiggle his body when ready to get down.
For a New Family to Know
Coco is said to understand commands sit, stay, go, and eat. Coco occasionally plays with chew toys, and switches between following his owner and staying in favorite spots when home. Coco is said to be well-behaved when home alone, and sometimes runs when outside off of leash. Owner says Coco does not like going out in the rain, and she normally has to carry him. Due to Coco’s age owner has switches him from dry to wet food, and feeds him Pedigree brand.
Behavior during Intake
Coco was social during intake. He initially hid in his carrier, but came to counselor when softly spoken to. Coco allowed counselor to hold him for a photo, and allowed all handling to be conducted. Coco showed no signs of aggression during intake.

BEHAVIOR :
Coco came into our center on 4/16/2016 as an owner surrender. It is reported Coco has lived with other small breed dogs, playful and comfortable. It is reported he is housetrained to go to the bathroom outside. It is reported he is unbothered if anyone touches his Food, Toys, Treats. He reportedly knows the commands sit, stay, go, and eat. Coco allowed all handling during intake, wagging tail, relaxed body. He allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, lip lick. Coco stood still and accepted the touch during Sensitivity item, mouth closed. He followed at the end of the leash playfully during Tag game, open mouth, wagging tail. Coco raised his lip and barked during first paw Squeeze, remaining item was conducted using Flank. He had no response to both Flank Squeezes. Coco showed no interest in Toy, though this may be due to environment as owner reports he occasionally plays with chew toys. Coco approached the helper dog at an appropriate pace, body relaxed. Due to his discomfort with his paws being touched, the Behavior Team feels Coco would do best with an Experienced adopter that does not have young children.
Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted, lip lick, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for at least a portion of the assessment item.
Tag: 1. Follows playfully at end of leash, body soft, open mouth, tail wag
Squeeze 1: 3. Dog raises lip and barks
Flank squeeze 1 / 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all.
Toy 1: No interest.
Dog-dog: 2. Dog approaches helper dog with tail at spine level, body not stiff, ears relaxed, lip neutral.
