11/28/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
Coco is a 3.5 year old Am. Staff. mix. She was w/ her family since she was a puppy. Her owner surrendered her due to lack of time and personal issues. Coco is limping on her left rear leg. Her vet suspects she has a torn CCL; Coco is on Tramadol. Coco just finished anti-biotics for a UTI and no longer has symptoms. Coco lived w/ 2 adult men and was friendly and affectionate and played exuberantly w/ them. Her owner generally doesn’t let strangers pet her. He reports that outside, she would be friendly and allow petting from strangers. Coco played at the dog park in the past/ She was friendly and played exuberantly w/ dogs and was friendly w/ people. A dog bit her ear 2 years ago, so her owner stopped taking her. Coco is friendly and playful w/ dogs she meets on walks. Coco hasn’t bit anyone. Coco doesn’t mind storms. Outside, she tries to run away when she hears loud cars/trucks. Coco growls (but doesn’t bite), when her owners take her food bowl while she’s eating. If they take a toy from her, she tries to grab it and may bite their hand in the process (this happened once w/ a stick years ago and her owner bled a little). During fetch, her owner tells her “stop,” waits until she drops her toy for him, asks her to sit, and then picks up her toy. Coco doesn’t mind when someone moves her off furniture, holds/restrains her, or bathes her. She sometimes startles (sits up abruptly) when woken up. She barks at and sniffs strangers that enter her home and growls if they try to pet her. She growls if they approach her owner. Coco’s family describes her as friendly, affectionate, playful, shy, and medium energy. She follows them. She plays w/ balls and rope toys and plays fetch, chase, and tug. She likes to play in the leaves. She lived inside and slept on the couch. She ate dry Beneful food. She’s housetrained, pottied in grass, and didn’t have accidents. Coco is well-behaved while left alone. She sits when asked. She starts walks at a brisk pace, pulling on the leash, but she slows down and stops pulling. She played alone in a fenced area of the park as well. Coco came to Admissions w/ a tense body and low tail, looking around. She growled when I picked up the scanner. She approached me and took treats gently. Her owner collared her. She wagged her tail and stood up/leaned against him. She stood next to me and sometimes leaned against me incidentally (e.g. while looking out the door). She walked w/ me through the shelter w/ a low body. \

If owner takes a toy from her, she tries to grab it and may grab their hand in the process Bite history: Coco grabbed her owner’s hand, breaking skin, when he tried to take a toy from her (See FG/RG) Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Friendly, affectionate, playful, shy, and medium energy. Owner reports that Coco is fearful of strangers. She barks at and sniffs strangers that enter her home and growls if they try to pet her. She growls if they approach her owner. Coco also sometimes startles (sits up abruptly) when woken up. Other notes: Upon intake Coco had a tense and low body and growled when the scanner was picked up. SAFER ASSESSMENT: Summary: Coco remains difficult to remove from her kennel as she is often seen at the back with fearful body language, tense, crouched and trembling. Coco has not acclimated well to the shelter environment and actively avoids any form of human interaction. Because of her clear discomfort with close up interaction, Coco is not an appropriate candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: When introduced to a dog on-leash, Coco appears interested, and sniffs, pulls toward to investigate. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/28/16 During her initial medical exam Coco was tense and growled, tolerating minimal handling. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner (Due to her known history and behavior presented in shelter, we believe Coco would benefit best from placement with a New Hope rescue group who can further assess this behavior in a stable environment.) Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression (See known history; Coco has displayed fearful/defensive behavior during her stay at our care centers, tolerating very minimal handling. It is recommended that Coco be allowed a proper time to decompress to aid in acclimating to a new environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Coco to new and unfamiliar situations.) _X_Resource guarding (See known history)
