Coco
Hello, my name is Coco. My animal id is #18144. I am a female black dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 1 years old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 12-Jan-2018, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- no time for animal.
Coco is at risk for behavior concerns (Adult only determination). Due to Coco’s reported dog reactivity in her surrender profile as well as her playgroup behavior and on leash reactivity in the care center environment, she is not a safe candidate for the public adoptions area.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: I’m pretty sure Coco was a runway model in her former life! As soon as showed her a sweater she propped her paws on my knees, bent her head so I could slide it over it-and became the easiest dog I have ever been lucky enough to “dress.” I swear! She even gave me her paws to tuck into the little arm holes. Suffice it to say, my normal dog wrangling skills were not needed with Coco! Coco is so cute too! At only about 40 pounds she’s a pint sized fox with a bushy tail and ears that seem to reach for the sun. She pranced around the yard, adorned in her sweater, quickly doing her “business.” Then, she was all cuddles even rubbing herself up against my legs like a cat. Coco’s former owner says she’s lived with children and was playful with them, she loves playing tug and fetch and she may do best as the only diva, I mean dog, in the home. As our time came to an end, I felt bad taking her little sweater off–you could tell she enjoyed it. Now she just needs her own person to play dress up with in her forever home! Ask to meet her today.
My medical notes are…
Weight: 40.6 lbs

Once she is allowed into the pen, her body remains extremely stiff and still but she does allow the helper dog to sniff her. She continues to focus on him with hard eyes but does not approached him. The dogs are separated and the session is ended.

BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: ADULT ONLY HOME
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13)
Recommendations comments:: Owner reported Coco has displayed some resource guarding behavior in the home. We feel that an adult-only home would be most beneficial at this time.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding
Potential challenges comments:: Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Coco was observed to growl and snap when engaged with items and at times bite the hand attempting to remove them. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Coco’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment.
