08/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cliff came into our care centers as a stray so any past behaviors in a home are unknown. Upon intake Cliff was tense and flinced when approached by an admissions counselor, though he moved away from interaction he was receptive to treats and showed no signs of aggression. Upon approaching his kennel, Cliff kept his body low to the ground, a bit fearful and showed much reluctance towards the leash and coming out of his kennel. Within a few minutes and some coaxing, Cliff hesitantly approached the handler and walked out of the kennel, body fearful. On his relief walk, he pulled a lightly on leash and chose to stay close to his handler. When entering the assessment room, Cliff kept his body low to the ground but showed interest in engaging in human interaction as he stayed near handler and assessor, head nudging and pawing lightly. During the stare portion of the assessment, he averted his eyes, pawing at the assessor. His body was a bit tense during sensitivity and he follows the assessor at the end of the leash, fearful. Cliff kept a firm grip on the toy during the resources portion of the assessment, keeping his body between the toy and assessor. The behavior department believes Cliff shows much potential though we cannot be certain if any behavior is surpressed due to the stress of the shelter environment. An experienced home with no children that can provide an appropriate period of decompression to help Cliff acclimate to a new environment is recommended. Force-free based training is advised during introduction and exposure to newer and unfamiliar situations to set him up for success. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body stiff, mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Flank squeeze 1/2: 1. Dog does not respond at all Toy 1: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold.
