07/19/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cleo previously stayed with the finder for 3 weeks and has been around an 8 year child. The finder stated Cleo will growl at first to strangers for a few minutes but will relax after a couple of minutes. The finder stated Cleo seems to get along well with the 8 year old child. The finder mentioned Cleo growl at the 8 year old when she attempted to come near the dog while she was eating but when the Finder approaches Cleo while she is eating, she does not growl and allows him to take away anything from her mouth. The finder describes Cleo as a fearful and affectionate. It was reported by the finder Cleo is house trained and has a medium activity level. At intake it was reported Cleo growled at the counselor, she allowed minimal handling. During SAFER Cleo came into the assessment room tense with her hackles raised, not all handling items were able to be conducted as Cleo growled and freezes at the assessor when attempting to approach her. She displayed no interest in the toy resource item during this portion of the assessment. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Toy: 1. No interest. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs in the Care Center, Cleo greets very briefly at the gate but once the helper dog was allowed in the pen, she avoids any contact. Cleo appears to be sensitive to the proximity of the other dog and will give appropriate warning cues- lip curl, growl- when the other dog is too close for her comfort level.
