BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Cleo has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Resource guarding,Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Resource/possession guarding: Potential resource guarding was noted in the previous home as Cleo was observed to growl/snap when her food bowl/toys are touched. For this reason we advise against ever removing items from Cleo’s possession without safely trading for an item or greater or equal value. Guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended to aid in safely managing/modifying this behavior in a new home environment. Handling/touch sensitivity:Cleo has growled and lunged when his paw were handled, showing a discomfort with touch in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Cleo’s paws at this time and being cautious when touching her in other areas as we do not know where she may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Cleo to be more comfortable with this. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression:Cleo has shown some reactivity towards other humans was noted by the previous owner (lunging, growling). Because this appears to present a challenge outside of the care centers, guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly advised to assess this behavior and modify/manage as needed. On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration:At the care center Cleo has been observed to react to other dogs and human passerby on leash, lunging towards them, growling. Cleo may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs and novel stimuli that may startle her. We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
