Cleo
Hello, my name is Cleo. My animal id is #15093. I am a female black dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 01-Dec-2017, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Cleo is at risk due to being diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex which is contagious to other dogs. She will likely require in home care with a course of antibiotics. There are no known behavior concerns for Cleo at this time, average determination.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: Born to be wild. Cleo, in short for Cleopatra. Cleo is an adorable bully and she likes to be seen that way. A bull in the arena going right for the red. She is jet black, shiny, a muscular little tank on short legs, always ready for any, really any types of adventures you have in store for her. Life has to be lived to its full extent and beyond. Cleo lives by this rule. She sits right at her door, ready to be leashed. She is likely house trained as related by her former owner and does her business as soon as we reach the street. She is a fast runner and if she was a car, or we would win any race we would take part in or get a speeding ticket on the highway. In playgroups with her peers, Cleo does not understand that not every body is on her page. She plays rough and tough although with the best intentions, for FUN!!!!! Really…do we have to spell it out? Cleo can be soft and mushy too. She likes to be petted and hugged and kissed and she fits perfectly on the lap. She was taught some manners , comes when called and sits even before you show her a treat. She is fine being dressed with a coat, embellished with a neck piece, tagged, run after and played with. True, she needs an active owner with a playful mind. Look at her. She might need some training and fine tuning but she is worth all the efforts one might want to put into her. Cleo is at the Manhattan Care Center, all ready to jump with joy into your life…

Summary:: The previous owner of Cleo describes her behavior around other dogs as “playful and exuberant”. Cleo has displayed exuberant, rough play behaviors when introduced off leash to dogs in the care center. She often has engaged in wrestling, mouthy play with frequent vocalization. The behavior department feels that Cleo should require slow introductions to social, playful dogs who are tolerant of rough, mouthy play.

We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Cleo consistently displays highly social behavior with her human caretakers. She maintains a loose wiggly body throughout interactions and solicits attention from handlers.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: AVERAGE (suitable for an adopter with an average amount of dog experience)
Behavior Asilomar: H – Healthy
Potential challenges: : Basic manners/poor impulse control
Potential challenges comments:: Basic manners/poor impulse control: It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
