A volunteer writes:
C’mon ladies (and gents!), sing it with me now: I wanna be the one to walk in the sun, oh girls they wanna have fu-uuun, o-ooh girls just wanna have…FUN! In a case of life imitating art, our own Cindi Lauper can’t wait to get out and have some crazy fun in the summer sun and she’s not shy about sharing her enthusiasm either! Sporting what I call the ‘telltale tongue’ of an energetic young pup, a smiling Cindi leaps and licks her way into my arms and heart from the moment her leash comes off then gets her zoomie on by running full pelt up and down the yard. Toys hold her interest for but a moment, treats even less, but bouncy socializing? Now that’s Cindi’s time to shine! Once we’ve burnt off some energy with a rousing game of chase I relax onto a bench and Cindi melts at my feet, rolling over for some much-appreciated belly rubs then sitting up again for more petting before scrambling onto my lap and passionately kiss kiss kissing her way to my chin. Cindi appears house trained, knows how to sit for treats, is always happy to share her toys and she’s never anything but friendly and affectionate with her human friends. So what’s the catch? Sadly, Cindi is just not a fan of other dogs and she’s made it abundantly clear both inside her kennel and out on walks that she needs to be the one and only Queen of her castle. If you’re dog- and fancy-free and ready to be ruled over with a velvet paw while enjoying a lifetime supply of bouncy hugs, silly smooches and full-on play dates as your reward then this is your girl. Come meet Cindi Lauper today and let her true colors shine for you!

BEHAVIOR :

KNOWN HISTORY: None
Unaltered Female, Stray
SAFER ASSESSMENT:
Look: 3. Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs her shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment.
Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. Her body is soft, panting, jumps up between attempts to lick Assessor.
Tag: 2. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Jumps repeatedly on assessor.
Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back.
Squeeze 2: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves her legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw.
Toy: 2. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is between you and the toy, and she is loose and wiggly. No growling or stiffness.
Summary: Cindi Lauper displayed a high level of activity and movement on her assessment, being in constant motion and jumping repeatedly on the assessor. She was social throughout.
DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT:
Summary
PLAYGROUP:
6/17: When introduced to a male helper dog through the fence with a muzzle, Cindi Lauper displayed concerning behavior, hard barking, lunging and baring teeth. An off leash introduction was not carried out.
INTAKE BEHAVIOR:
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR:
During her initial medical exam Cindi Lauper allowed handling
ENERGY LEVEL:
We have no history on Cindi Lauper so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. In the care center she has been active and enthusiastic. She may have a low threshold for arousal and needs guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy when she becomes overstimulated. She will need daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, and a force-free, positive reinforcement-based training class may help her to learn impulse control and to train desirable behaviors that can be rewarded.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below)
_X_No young children (under 5): Due to how quickly Cndi Lauper escalates to hard jumping up, we recommend a home without young children. Older children who are comfortable around large, jumpy dogs should have an in depth interaction prior to adoption.
Potential challenges:
_X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control: Cindi Lauper displays a high level of jumping up and excitement at the care center. It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute any frustration and teach her to control her impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training only is recommended.
_X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration: At the care center Cindi Lauper has been observed to react to other dogs on leash, lunging towards them, barking and growling.  Cindi Lauper may need positive reinforcement, reward based training to teach her to look at you rather than other dogs.  We recommend a front clip harness or head halter to help manage this behavior.
