11/04/2015 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Ciaro is simply brindlicous!!! Ciaro has a very unique white tip on his tail making him even more adorable!!! Ciaro walks pretty well on leash (he only pulls a bit) and was so proud to show me he knew how to sit. Ciaro loves to give kisses in return for being petted. He is really a very sweet puppy. Ciaro seemed to like the other dogs he encountered at the shelter and is very submissive. All and all a pretty terrific dog. If your looking for a handsome fella to add to your family. Ciaro is at the Manhattan Care Center waiting. Another volunteer writes: Well helllllllooo handsome! Ciaro had me at hello when he met my eyes with a soft and welcoming gaze. Stunningly handsome in his shiny brindle coat, his tail curves up into a soft C, with a little white tip at the end. He seriously could grace the cover of Doggie GQ and be the next super model!! Housetrained and so happy to come out for a walk he’s low key and gentle, quietly coming into my lap for some hugs and kisses. He takes treats with the very edge of his teeth – so gently I can barely feel him, and when not to his liking quietly spits them out. Kind of like a kid dumping his broccoli! So easy and sweet, Ciaro is hoping that his new family will walk in the door soon. We’re rooting for him, and hope so too. He’s a gem just waiting to be discovered. Another volunteer writes: Ciaro, only 13 months old, is a beautiful puppy. He loves life and everything about it. All he needs is you. Yes, you. Why not take the time to come take young Ciaro for a walk. If you do, I promise, you will want him in your family.
01/16/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Cairo, formerly Ciaro, has been SAFERed three times in 2015 (9/1, 10/14, and 11/21). During the first evaluation he was slightly uncomfortable with close handling, jumpy and flinching, but allowed all handling. During the second evaluation he was loose and wiggly, joined in during Tag and calmed quickly when the game was over. During the third evaluation he was social and very playful with the assessor but showed apparent overstimulation and a lack of inhibition during the Tag game, nipping the assessor’s ankle (did not break skin). Previous owner profiles note that he has lived with adults and was playful and respectful. He has not spent time around children, though he did live with another large dog with whom he was playful and exuberant. He allowed his owners to touch his food, toys, and treats. He has been described as playful, excitable, friendly, pushy, affectionate, and independent. His most recent profile notes that Cairo has a tendency to destroy and sometimes eat non-food items, including leather material, carpet, and mattress material. We are unaware what, if any, steps have been taken to try and modify this behavior. Cairo was not crate trained. During his most recent intake, a lump was noted on his throat and Cairo nipped at the Admissions Counselor when she tried to look at the lump. No handling challenges were noted during his initial medical examination. Due to Cairo’s reported destructive behavior and eating of inappropriate items, as well as the concerns with high arousal seen on previous SAFER assessments and his current depressed attitude, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can address Cairo’s medical condition and then re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment, and provide any behavior modification and management he may need.
09/01/2015 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Ciaro is social and engages in rough play with other playful dogs. He is tolerant of pushy behavior. Based on his behavior during playgroup, the Behavior Department recommends that Ciaro can go to a home with both male and female dogs. He seems to do well with playful dogs so we recommend he be placed with energetic, playful dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Ciaro is very polite and bouncy. He is tolerant of pushy, mouthy dogs and will engage in brief bouncy running play. 9/2 update Ciaro did not engage in play with a social female, he would coward away into a corner but was very tolerant. 9/3 update Ciaro continues to not engage in play and will often retreat to a corner, he is tolerant and does not correct. 9/4 update Ciaro stayed by human handlers and did not interact with any dogs. 9/5 update When introduced to a male dog, Ciaro was very polite and tolerant but did not engage in play. 9/10 update: Ciaro engages in vocal running play with energetic males and females. He is selective, however, as he may become stiff and uncomfortable with some dogs. 9/11 update: Ciaro engages in running play with a playful female. 10/11 update: Ciaro is social and playful, engaging in running play with both males and females. He may mount another male but responds well to correction. 10/13 update: Ciaro is social and engages in play with both males and females.
