Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered female, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 12/22/16 Look: 1. Dog leans forward or jumps up to lick the Assessor’s face with tail wagging, ears back and eyes averted. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1/ 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog smells, then turns away. Summary: Chyna was playful and social towards the assessor, she displayed no behavioral concerns. PLAYGROUP: Chyna was surrendered as a stray so her past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Chyna is nervous when greeting both male and female dogs. She mostly keeps to herself, occasionally walking slowly towards another dog and leaning forward, showing slight interest in interacting with other dogs. When the other dog attempt to greet her, Chyna becomes nervous and begins to bark and back away. The Behavior Department believes that Chyna would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home. She has shown slightly sociability towards other dogs, leading the Behavior Department to believe that with slow introductions, she may be comfortable with calm dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that any dog-dog interactions conducted with Chyna be supervised and short and that reward-based, force-free training be utilized to help desensitize and counter-condition Chyna to associate other dogs with positive things such as toys or treats. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 12/22/16 Chyna allowed all handling during her initial medical examination. ENERGY LEVEL: RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _x_Recommend no dog parks (Chyna has displayed body language indicating that she is nervous around other dogs. The Behavior Department recommends that Chyna not be taken to dog parks until her behavior towards other dogs is further assessed in a more controlled environment. See playgroup notes for further information.)

A volunteer writes: Chyna is impossibly cute AND impossibly sweet…a living doll! She is very wiggly, craves affection and harbors a genuine love for people. She pulls a little on the leash in excitement, but is always thrilled about whoever is on the other end of it and is very attentive. She seems housebroken, eagerly sits for treats, and softly props her paws up for attention in a very endearing way. When I sat down on a recent walk she made a few attempts to make it entirely into my lap in one jump! She made it closer each time, but eventually settled with just smushing her top half against me. She licks or gently mouths my hands when I pet her and asks for more by nuzzling her head under them…she is SO, SO SWEET. She is quick to plant herself in the lap of any sitting staff members we pass too, but despite being so generous with her love (and kisses!) Chyna manages to make everyone on the receiving end of it feel nothing short of special. Please come see for yourself at Brooklyn ACC!
