10/08/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Hey hey hey, whatcha doin up there? Come smile with me! I’m Chocolate but don’t worry, I’m much more original than my name, in fact my volunteer friends say I’m one of a kind! My Mom had to move somewhere I wasn’t welcome and yeah, I’ll admit it was a tough adjustment at first but I’m so over that now, who can stay mad when there are new people to meet, new toys to play with and a whole new ‘hood to explore? I’m an energetic guy but I know how to come and sit and walk quite nicely on leash and I’m happy to say hi to other dogs large or small, plus Mom made sure I’m what you call ‘house trained’ so I wait until we hit the road to take care of business. I’m pretty relaxed and nothing really bugs me; staying in while you work, loud noises, sharing my stuff, meeting new folks or even taking a bath, it’s all good as long as I know I’m loved and you’ve got my back–seriously, don’t forget to scrub that while I’m in the tub, I can’t reach up there! City living is nada problema but it would be nice to have a yard or a park nearby so we can play chase and fetch and I can get my zoomie on and I’m also used to two walks a day, though if you wanna go for more I would totally be up for that too. As long as I’ve got toys to munch on I’ll leave the leash alone because I’m a smart guy, I know the difference. My faves are ball and rope and isn’t tug-o-war just the best thing ever?!! My friends tell me I make a pretty awesome playmate, what with the happy vibe and the toy sharing and all, but things can get pretty bouncy so a new family without any of those little humans would be best. I really miss my Mom and my bed and my home but I’m ready to move on and start over as soon as possible, so whaddaya say? Wanna play?
10/07/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: [Unaltered, Owner Surrender] Previously lived with: Adults Behavior toward children: Unknown Behavior toward dogs: Unknown Behavior toward cats: Unknown FG/RG: He is not bothered when you take his food bowl, treat, or toy away. Bite history: None reported Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: Chocolate is described as playful, affectionate and friendly, with a high activity level. Other notes: During the intake, Chocolate was relaxed with soft body and was highly active. SAFER ASSESSMENT: [10-6-16] Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 2. Dog displays high energy and movement, but it is directed toward getting closer to the Assessor. His body is soft, likely panting, may jump up between attempts to lick Assessor. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog is soft in body and eye, and moves his legs/body so that the Assessor is unable to hold the paw Squeeze 1: 3. Dog head flips while pulling back paw. Toy: 4. Dog freezes Summary: Chocolate appears to be a high-energy dog that will likely do best with an adopter prepared to provide mental and physical stimulation and appropriate outlets for his energy. He was overexcited during handling, jumping up, grabbing at the leash, and was hard to position. He also showed a red flag behavior over the toy in the evaluation room. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: [10-6-16]: When off leash with a spayed female Chocolate is tense, greeting with a high tail and not moving as she sniffs his face. He eventually relaxes a bit and then displays sexually motivated behaviors but does not attempt to mount. Chocolate does not engage in play when solicited. His owner reports he “has never lived with other dogs and when outside he barks at other dogs in a playful manner.” The behavior department recommends slow introductions to any resident dogs as well as only placing him in a home with a calmer, less playful dog. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: [10-5-16]: During his initial medical examination, Chocolate was tense with medical handling and restraint.
ENERGY LEVEL: Chocolate’s owner describes an active, exuberant dog, which matches the energy level we have seen in the care center. Chocolate is a young, energetic dog who will need guidance to learn how to appropriately channel that energy. We recommend daily mental and physical stimulation and exercise, engaging enrichment like Buster cubes and Kongs, and feeding via puzzle toys. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience) _X_No young children (under 5): While no guarding behavior was reported in the home, we did see the potential in Chocolate to become uncomfortable and escalate (giving an appropriate warning) when his toy was removed during his evaluation. Due to this, as well as his overall exuberance we recommend a home without young children. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: See Recommendations section above. We cannot be certain whether any guarding or possessive behavior may appear in a home environment, but we recommend adopters comfortable with safe management and modification of guarding behavior in case it does.
