A volunteer writes:
A sweet Hershey’s Kiss, that’s our Chocolate (also known as Bree). She is a classic, brindled beauty with endless, swirling rivers of caramel running through her gorgeous coat. When I first meet Bree I’m instantly taken by her lovely, expressive face. Her ears alone seem to speak a thousand words. They move rapidly as I speak to her, forward and back, forward and back, following my inflection. When at last I say “go outside?” her head tilts adorably to the right and she blinks. Now I’m speaking her language. Once leashed she walks slowly and calmly, sticking right by my side, undistracted by any passing pups or people. The moment we’re outdoors – it’s right to business. And boy, did Bree have business! I’m now even more impressed by how patiently and quietly she waited her turn in her kennel. And that’s not where Bree’s refined manners end. When it’s time for treats she sits without my asking, looking up at me once again with those ears (forward, back, forward, back). On my “OK!” she pops halfway up on her hind legs taking the jerky gently from my hand and I glimpse a little smile as she enjoys it in the sun.  As she continues to snack away I crawl onto the ground with her, scratching her back and tracing one of those caramel rivers with my hand. Suddenly, without warning, she is on high alert. There’s a pup in a neighboring pen! A playful, young pup, boing-boing-ing like Tigger only yards away. Bree immediately begins a full-body tail wag (a vibrating Hershey’s Kiss) but instinctively moves closer to me and further from her would-be playmate. She whines excitedly but has now moved herself almost entirely to my lap. Eventually the young pup grows bored and retreats to his handler, gone from our sight. Bree looks sadly after him, then up at me. Her ears speak a thousand words but this time, they don’t have to say a thing. “There’s a whole world out there to see. But I’m afraid.” I kiss our chocolate Kiss on top of her head and say, “That’s OK. When you’re ready, it will be there.” Bree is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC.
SAFER: AVERAGEChocolate walks calmly on leash. She was calm and relaxed during handling and easily engages in play, body is loose and wiggly, mouth open, at the end of the game she grab the leash with a soft body language ( easy to distract).  Chocolate took the toy away but had soft body language.

Chocolate did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that she can go to an Average home.

Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture.

Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. grab at the leash (soft body) easily to distract her.

Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Toy 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy.

When off leash with other dogs Chocolate is uncomfortable, trembling asthe helper dog sniffs her. She then will seek attention from handlers.
