09/17/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
CANINE BEHAVIOR EVALUATION for Choco Chip A1125458 KNOWN HISTORY: None 9/14/2017 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 09/17/2017 Summary: While appearing social at times, Choco Chip has been observed to escalate to threatening behavior on multiple occasions without clear warning. For these reasons, Choco chip is not a candidate for an assessment at this time. PLAYGROUP: 9/14: When introduced off leash to the female greeter dog, Choco Chip approaches, sniffs, follows and continues to sniff with a neutral body. He does not otherwise display interest in further approach or socializing. History around dogs is unknown for Choco Chip due to arriving as a stray. The behavior department recommends allowing Choco Chip a period of decompression before immediate introductions to other dogs. Future introductions should be conducted at a slow pace to respectful dogs. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 09/14/2017 During his initial medical examination, Choco chip was initially playful and allowing handling though suddenly snapped and growled twice and became reactive on leash. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: On multiple occasions, Choco chip has been observed to escalate to threatening behavior without clear warning. Choco chip has appeared friendly then has snapped and growled suddenly. Choco chip has also jumped and snapped at a caretaker’s arm during walk. Because of the inconsistently in behavior and the unpredictability, Choco chip is unable to safely handle in the care center.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all the noted concerns displayed in shelter in addition to our lack of known history, the behavior department recommends placement with a rescue group to further assess Choco chip’s behavior in a stable environment. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Choco chip has growled and snapped when handled, showing an uncomfortability with touch in certain areas. It is important to be cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Choco chip to be more comfortable with this _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Choco chip has been observed to escalate quickly to snapping and growling, so this is an established behavior that he offers when he feels threatened. Choco chip needs careful behavior modification and management to prevent future bites. We recommend only force-free, reward-based training methods for Choco chip as more aversive techniques are likely to increase fear and increase the risk of aggression. _X_Anxiety
