02/22/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Choco is already a big boy at eight months of age…His square face topped by butterfly ears, his big puzzled and naive eyes….He is plain adorable…Choco is no pound puppy, though..He is a strong babe who pulls on the leash and engages in rambunctious and mouthy play with other dogs in playgroups. He likes to jump high and he is known to chew on household items when his family is away…The very reason his owners relinquished him to the care center. Choco comes otherwise with excellent recommendations. He lived and played gently with the children of the house and is said to be very playful and affectionate…Choco’s little boy face got me.. Really cute.. He comes when called, sits very nicely on command, does his business without marking and puts his head right in my lap for petting…Choco is a high energy puppy, very enthusiastic who needs basic training in puppy savvy hands and he will be an awesome adult, in looks and character. He has goodness in him, a great core..He just needs the polish…Let’s not waste his life because he only needs basic training…Choco is just eight month old and has a long life in front to of him but only if you give him a chance, the chance to be his new master and teacher. Choco is at the Manhattan Care Center. He has put all his hopes in your hands.
02/18/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Choco came into our center as an owner surrender citing that he chewed a hold in the wall of owner’s apartment. It is reported he lived with children ages 8-13, playing gently. Owner reports Choco snapped when attempting to pick up spilled Food near the Food bowl. Owner also reports Choco does not like to be in dark places or walk down stairs. Owner reports Choco is housetrained and goes outside on cement. When left alone in the home, Choco may be destructive and chew up things. It is reported he has never been crate trained. Upon intake, Choco was hyper and attempted to play with everyone he came in contact with. He pulled on leash for his relief walk, but was hesitant to go through doorways or down stairs. However, Choco was willing to with coaxing and a treat. Choco allowed his head to be cupped in assessor’s hands during Look item, tail fast wagging. He leaned into assessor during Sensitivity item, lip lick, ears back, tail wag. Chco followed at the end of the leash for Tag game, body soft. He was difficult to position for Squeeze item, high energy and movement, but once positioned he did not pull his paw back on both Squeeze attempts. Choco kept a firm grip on Toy, body loose. When off leash with other dogs, Choco engages in rough, running play with males and females. He slows and crouches down when offered correction. The Behavior Team feels Choco would do best with an Experienced adopter. Choco will benefit from puppy obedience classes to work on leash manners, focus and crate training to decrease any destruction done in the home when left alone. Choco will require daily mental and physical stimulation in the forms of daily walks, runs, exercise, play to positively direct his high energy and puppy enthusiasm. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail fast wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Choco engages in rough, running play with males and females, becoming vocal during play. He is tolerant and patient with inappropriate dogs but when the other dog is persistent (typically with mounting) he will eventually correct. The behavior department feels that Choco could go to a howe with another exuberant dog. When off leash with other dogs, Choco engages in rough, running play with males and females. He slows and crouches down when offered correction. 2/20 update: Choco is uncomfortable when mounted by a male but eventually offers correction when it is persistent.
