02/15/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: What a character our Chip Skylark is!! His legs are a little “off” and sometimes when he sits he looks like he’s trying to give himself a double chin, but he is so, so cute! He seems housebroken, knows “sit’ and “paw” (and wasted no time showing both off in the lobby when he was brought in!) and is highly treat-motivated. He gets chatty when he wants something and seems frustrated that I’m still on the learning curve for his lingo, but is forgiving and wiggly. Tossing him a toy is like watching the couple’s first dance at a wedding — really, a love story. He’ll roll on his back, bat at it with his paws, sneak up on it, and squeeze into narrow spaces to be reunited with it. Though he needs no assistance keeping himself entertained, he’ll easily let me take it from his mouth. When he’s in play mode he sometimes mistakes the leash for a toy, but is working on learning they’re just for walking! He’s very friendly and waggy and will lick my hands and make soft eye contact when I pet him. In his cage he assumes quirky laying positions, like folding his front legs under his body or curling them out like he’s got his arm around an invisible lady friend…he somehow always manages to be so debonair! I look forward to learning what other fantastic charms Chip has up his sleeve, but really I hope someone else beats me to it — a guy like this can only be fully appreciated in a home! He’d love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!
02/10/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Chip Skylark came in as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. At intake it was reported Chip was very social and friendly, he allowed all handling. During SAFER Chip Skylark came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, he was friendly and playful towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Chip follows the handler mouths the leash in a playful manner with his body soft during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Chip was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Chip Skylark appears to be sociable, and did not display any behaviors concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft and mouths the leash in a playful manner. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Dog-dog: When off leash with other dogs, Chip Skylark greets appropriately with a soft body. He interacts with the helper dog briefly but does not engage in play.
02/09/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Chip Skylark greets other dogs with a loose, wiggly and soft body. He appears to lack appropriate play skills but does attempt to engage with playful females by muzzle punching different parts of the body. His energy level may sometimes increase as the interaction continues but he does respond to human interruptions and immediately responds to another dog’s corrections for his behavior. Due to his behavior in play group, the Behavior Department feels he is suitable for a home with other dogs of any play style and temperament. When off leash with other dogs, Chip Skylark greets appropriately with a soft body. He interacts with the helper dog briefly but does not engage in play. 2/15 update: Chip Skylark greets the other dogs with a loose, wiggly and soft body. He appears to lack appropriate play skills but does attempt to engage with playful females by muzzle punching different parts of the body. Chip Skylark also is a little sexually motivated but does not attempt to mount, just chin overs. 2/17 update: Chip Skylark engages in bouts of gentle bouncy, chase play. He may become motivated sexually but does respond to another dog’s corrections for his behavior and immediately backs down. 2/18 update: Chip Skylark’s energy level was elevated today. He rushed in to greet with a chest bump and leap on. He was slowed down by the handlers but persisted in his behavior. He also was mouthy with both the dog and was mouthy the leash. 2/22 update: Chip Skylark continues to have high energy when in play group. Today he did not engage in any play but was mostly sexually motivated. He does respond to human interruptions and immediately responds to another dog’s corrections for his behavior.
