11/14/2016 Exam Type BEHAVIORPART2 – Medical Rating is 1 – NORMAL , Behavior Rating is EXPNOCHILD, Weight 56.0 LBS.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Experienced, adult-only home _X_No children (under 13): Chili has shown fearful body language and has escalated to snapping at least once when pushed with handling. Therefore we feel he may be intimidated by children, and will be most comfortable in an adult-only home. Potential challenges: _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Chili showed good coping skills during the SAFER assessment, avoiding rather than escalating, but when pushed over threshold Chili (medical exam) Chili did snap as a warning. He warmed up significantly when playing with other dogs, and even began engaging in active play himself, so we believe that with encouragement Chili can gain confidence and adjust to a new home and new family. However, it is important to make sure Chili remains under threshold and is not forced into situations where he is uncomfortable, so he does not feel forced to escalate his warnings. A volunteer writes: Trying to capture how stunning Chili’s coat is, is like, well….trying to photograph a unicorn! Staff and volunteers have already voted him Best Dressed, as his legs are a rich mahogany color melding into black on his back…all colors shining with apparent good care. Chili is a bit shy in general, and hand shy as well, so we simply chatted as we walked so that he could get to know me. His leash manners are excellent, and as we walk, he looks up at everyone we pass….perhaps hoping one of them is his person, or maybe that one of them will be his new person. Chili is a pro posing for photos both on leash and off leash in a pen making soft eye contact and holding my gaze. Such a good boy! He loves playing fetch, will leap for a fly ball and brings it back to me for another toss. No guarding here as I can take it right out of his mouth. Chili has been frolicking in group play with both girls and boys, bowing to solicit play. Our behavior team feels that Chili will do best in an adult-only home due to his timidity about touch. He needs to feel comfortable with new people, initiating contact himself. He may also enjoy a canine sibling as he’s done well with other dogs. Chili is a terrific dog who, with the time to relax and feel safe and loved, will love you to the moon and back. I think that he’s so worth the effort, but don’t take my word for it, come meet him yourself.

KNOWN HISTORY: Unknown Unaltered, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/10/16 Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. His body posture is stiff and fearful, his tail is low and not moving. Dog whines. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is down, body stiff, mouth closed, lip licks. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body low and a bit fearful. Squeeze 1: 3. Dog closes mouth, becomes stiff, moves away. Flank squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Flank squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Chili was very fearful throughout the assessment and appeared uncomfortable with handling. DOG-DOG INTERACTION ASSESSMENT: Summary PLAYGROUP: 11/9: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Chili initially appears nervous upon greeting. Chili takes time to warm up before displaying interest in play. He offers play bows, spins and begins to engage in running chase play. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/9/2016 Chili was growling during his initial medical exam, resisted handling and snapped. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Chili has shown some barrier reactivity in the care center kennel, including hard barking, low growling, baring teeth, lunging, and snapping at cage bars. He softens once out of the kennel and remains easy to walk and handle outside. He has become comfortable with his daily caretakers, with whom he is affectionate and will solicit attention. But is it best that Chili leave the kennel environment quickly so as to prevent rehearsal of this barrier behavior.

Based on observation made while in our care, the behavior department feels that Chili may be placed into a home with other dogs. 11/9: When introduced off leash to other dogs in the care center, Chilli initially appears nervous upon greeting. He offers play bows, spins and begins to engage in running chase play. 11/11: Chili engages in bouncy, running play with males and females.
