08/11/2017 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Chico’s markings make him look like a superhero and he pretty much IS one…he’s all sorts of amazing! He looks well cared for and of course his most obvious super power is getting everyone’s attention with his adorable looks, but they don’t stop there! He seems housebroken, listens very well to “sit” and “paw” (sometimes he starts to offer it before I can ask!), and in general is very attentive. He LOVES toys and his joy while playing with them is contagious. You don’t need to be made of fluff and squeakers to win his heart; although he was a bit shell shocked when he first arrived, Chico loves people and has warmed up to be very waggy and cuddly. He is such a curious, playful, sweet boy…all he needs is a sidekick! Come meet him at Brooklyn ACC…together you could be unstoppable!

PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Chico greets a novel female dog on his tip toes. He is a bit sexually motivated but does not attempt to mount her. He engages in cooperative play, and is tolerant of corrections. Chico was brought to us as a stray so his past behavior with other dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Chico would be most comfortable in a home with a female dog that is tolerant of his sexually motivated behavior. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/3/17 At intake Chico was Nervous at first but was able to put leash on and walk. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/3/17 During the initial examination Chico was nervous, but tolerated handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Chico so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment; though he displayed medium energy and movement throughout assessment. Chico will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the (behaviors outlined below).
Potential challenges: _X_ Handling/touch sensitivity-Chico has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times. It is important to always go slow and give Chico the option to walk away from any social interaction. Chico should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Chico’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Chico may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings.
