01/17/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Over the years as a volunteer, I’ve met and interacted with hundreds of dogs — “Truly” is TRULY someone special. From the moment I met her at an offsite adoption event, she was absolutely lovely. Calm in the crate, she patiently waited for me to get the leash, then out of the truck we went for a walk down the block so she could do her business, and along the way, Truly poked her head into several shops, where she was welcomed with smiles. Miss Truly is a bit of a ham, leaning-in against ankles and legs until she gets your attention, then standing to give a friendly kiss! At 60+ lbs, she is a sturdy girl, but that doesn’t phase her at all, and she will clamber right into your lap to snuggle, and/or to give a hug and yes, more kisses. Brought in as a stray, we do not know what Truly’s past was, but she is a very friendly dog with all people she encountered (children included) and seems good with other dogs too, meeting several during the course of our recent afternoon together. This dog has such an easy, mellow, nice energy — the person or family who adopts her will be “truly” lucky to find such a sweet and loyal friend. Come and adopt Truly today, she is waiting for her true forever home.
02/10/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Truly stayed briefly in a foster home, during which time she lived with 2 adults, a 2-year-old, an infant, and a mastiff mix. Truly was relaxed and affectionate with the infant. She showed no food or resource guarding behavior in the home. However, Truly has a reported history of biting another dog over a treat; the other dog needed no medical care for the injury. She gave repeated warnings of discomfort around the foster’s resident dog with no clear provocation: standing over her, baring teeth, body tense. If the other dog moved, Truly barked and air-snapped at her. Truly appears to be proximity sensitive and after several warnings of aggression toward the other dog, when coaxed into close physical proximity a small scuffle ensued and Truly bit the other dog’s ear. Injury was minor. In the care center, Truly has also shown discomfort around other large dogs. Based upon repeated notification by Truly that she prefers human company to canine, we are requesting that Truly be the only dog in her future home. We recommend against off-leash interactions and dog parks until Truly’s underlying anxiety and warnings of aggression toward other dogs are addressed. 1/13 SAFER: Truly has been relaxed and playful with children aged 5, 7, and 15. She lived with a male pit bull and with a cat. She got along well with the cat. She is noted to have bitten a dog in the past over a treat, but does not guard from humans in the home. Truly is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, excitable, and sensitive to people’s emotions, with a high activity level. Truly came into the assessment room loose and wiggly, she was friendly, social and affectionate towards the assessor, allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Truly joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Truly was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Truly appears to be sociable, and showed no concerns during her aggression assessment. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body, allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game, jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds, eyes averted, ears relaxed. Toy: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, relinquishes toy.
