Chestnut
Hello, my name is Chestnut. My animal id is #15479. I am a female tan dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 12 years old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 05-Dec-2017.
Chestnut is at risk for medical concerns. She is geriatric, emaciated and has a heart murmur. A geriatric workup including blood work and an echo-cardiogram is recommended upon placement.

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
Date of intake:: 12/5/2017
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Means of surrender (length of time in previous home):: Stray
Date of assessment:: 12/8/2017
Summary:: Due to her current medical condition/health status, Chestnut is not an appropriate candidate for a SAFER assessment at this time. The behavior department believes Chestnut would benefit best from placement with a New Hope Rescue who can meet her needs medically and then assess behavior once she is in a stable environment. Force-free, reward based training is advised when introducing/exposing Chestnut to new and unfamiliar situations.
Date of intake:: 12/5/2017
Date of initial:: 12/5/2017
Summary:: Difficult to handle, will turn and snap.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: NEW HOPE ONLY
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Recommendations:: No children (under 13),Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: New Hope Partner: Chestnut has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Fearful/potential for defensive aggression
Potential challenges comments:: Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Chestnut has displayed fearful behavior in shelter, she displays no social behavior towards handlers and attempts to increase distance and avoid contact. Because she is uncomfortable, Chestnut does not tolerate handling around her face and head and has attempted to bite upon direct contact.
