02/22/2016 PET PROFILE MEMO
02/22/16 20:29 Chester allowed me to pet him, collar him, hold him and he took treats gently. He jumped up for attention and had a wagging tail. He showed no signs of aggression.
03/03/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: Wrapped in a coat of cinnamon and cream, Chester is like the warm sun on a blustery day. Spend one hour with him and you’re left wanting another, and another, and then maybe just one more after that. Long-legged and lithe like a colt, Chester seems far more mature than his 2 years, preferring calm walks and long snuggles over a rousing game of fetch. On one of those recent, wintry days, we toured around the near-empty park, stopping frequently to allow for all items of interest (there were many!) to be sniffed. He did his business right away, then walked along next to me beautifully and took treats gently from my hand just as any gentleman would. Chester came to us as a stray along with his housemate Maribell who was recently adopted. He appears to have been well cared for, though is slightly underweight. On our walk, he shivered even under the warm sun, so we decided to head back to a more insulated pen. Once there, passing pups incite furious tail wags from Chester, but no barking or signs of aggression. Birds are a different story! As each one lands in our vicinity he jumps and dives for them, comically missing every time. Once he resigns himself to his lack of wings he comes over to sit with me, resting his head on my knee. I rub his velvet ears and he closes his eyes, opening them only when I stop as if to say, “Hey! Let’s keep that going!” Chester is gentle and lovely, having accepted his new circumstances with nothing but grace. And while he may not have his wings yet, I hope he gets them soon. Chester is waiting in adoptions at Manhattan’s ACC. Another volunteer writes: Mild-mannered as Clark Kent and handsome as Superman, sweet Chester is the king of chillin’ out and the perfect companion for whiling away a sunny afternoon. Does he enjoy snuggles? Oooh, yes he does! Will he sit on command like a gentleman? Of course! Is he thrilled to meet new doggie friends? You betcha he is! Chester’s always eager to explore, and he sniffs and spots wildlife like a true hound dog, though his furry neck ruff suggests more exotic forebears. Whatever combination of breeds went into this gorgeous guy the result is 100 percent Sweetheart, and now he’s got the stellar behavior evaluation to prove it. If soft, easy-going good boys are your cup of tea, then Chester would love to make it tea for two (or the whole family!), just ask for him by name.
02/24/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Chester walks calmly on leash. He was sociable toward the handler during the assessment – soft body. Chester was calm and relaxed during handling. He was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Chester was not interested in toys. Chester did not show any concern during the behavior assessment. The behavior department feels that he can go to an Average home. Look: 1. Dog holds gaze with soft eyes, soft body. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Dog holds gaze for three full seconds. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Playgroup Notes: When off leash with other dogs, Chester greets and sniffs, then eventually becomes a bit sexually motivated.
02/23/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Chester has briefly engaged in play with other dogs. He greets poth males and females politely. Occasionally, Chester has become sexually motivated, but responds well to correction. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction for Chester to ensure compatability with a resident dog. He arrived into our care as a stray, so in-home behaviors with dogs are unknown. When off leash with other dogs, Chester greets and sniffs, then eventually becomes a bit sexually motivated. 2/25 update: Chester engages in bouts of play, with the intent to eventually mount the female dog. 2/26 update: Chester greets politely and postures to mount, but he does not. He greets a male well through the gate. 2/27 update: Chester attempts to mount but will engage in play after correction is offered. 2/28 update: Chester attempts to mount a calm male dog but ceases when handler interruption is used, then continues to politely interact. 3/1 update: Chester briefly attempts to mount but responds well to correction. He is then polite when interacting. 3/2 update: Chester greets politely, roams, briefly does posture to mount but loses interest when she moves away. 3/3 update: Chester mostly keeps to himself while in the yard.
