Chanel aka Cheesecake
Hello, my name is Chanel aka Cheesecake. My animal id is #21443. I am a desexed female white dog at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 5 years 1 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a stray on 22-Feb-2018.
Cheesecake is at risk due to having been diagnosed with Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex which is contagious to other dogs. Cheesecake will likely require in home care with a course of antibiotics. Cheesecake should go to an experienced dog home.
Let’s get to know each other a bit more…
A volunteer writes: So quiet in her kennel, her tail starts to wag as I unlatch her door. Easily leashed we head outside where going potty was her first priority so she is likely housebroken. Showing off lovely leash manners, CC (I give nicknames to all my friends) ignores other dogs we pass on our walk. As we walk I get a chance to admire her pristine coat, and pleasantly round figure; she’s clearly been well taken care of before joining us. Off leash in a pen she’s happy to join me on the bench, snuggling close, and although a bit shy giving kisses, and when I invited her down to play she let me know cuddling on the bench was her first choice! So sweet! And sweet is the operative word here, as she’s soft and easy, happy to make a new human friend. Although she was a bit anxious when she first joined us, it’s noted in her behavior assessment that “Dog leans into the assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth”. CC is meltingly delicious, ready to find her place by your side, forever, and ever and ever.

Details on my behavior are…
Behavior Condition: 3. Yellow
Date of intake:: 2/22/2018
Spay/Neuter status:: No
Date of assessment:: 2/25/2018
Look:: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. Allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.
Sensitivity:: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft or squinty, soft and loose body, open mouth.
Tag:: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog might jump on Assessor once play begins.
Paw squeeze 1:: 2. Dog quickly pulls back.
Paw squeeze 2:: 2. Dog gently places open mouth over the Assessor’s hand without applying pressure.
Flank squeeze 1:: Item not conducted
Flank squeeze 2:: Item not conducted
Toy:: 1. Minimal interest in toy, dog may smell or lick, then turns away.
Summary:: Cheesecake quickly approached the assessor in the assessment room with a soft body. She appeared a bit anxious, panting and pacing, and displayed a high level of activity and movement. She was social throughout and allowed all handling.
Summary (1):: 2/23: When introduced off leash to a male dog, Cheesecake constantly barks in the dog’s face.
Date of initial:: 2/22/2018
Summary:: Cheescake was barking in the carrier and once out was timid but allowed handling.
ENERGY LEVEL:: We have no history on Cheesecake so we cannot be certain of her behavior in a home environment. However, she is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep her engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct her energy and enthusiasm.
IN SHELTER OBSERVATIONS:: Cheesecake has displayed warning behaviors in her kennel towards novel people (barking, distance increasing), but once outside of her kennel and provided adequate time to acclimate displays highly social behavior. She may display some anxious behavior, but will engage with her care takers, taking treats and soliciting attention.
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION:: EXPERIENCE (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the behaviors outlined below)
Behavior Asilomar: TM – Treatable-Manageable
Potential challenges: : Anxiety
Potential challenges comments:: Anxiety: Cheesecake appears a bit anxious at the care center, panting, barking, and pacing a lot. We have no history on her in a home, so we do not know if this behavior will be present outside of the care center. If it does occur, we recommend giving her puzzle toys, long walks, and things to do to relieve her anxiety. Positive reinforcement, reward based training only should be used.
