When re-approaching with the muzzle, he immediately stands over the novel female dog with a stiff body. He air snaps at her when she offers him a hard correction. They are separated and the session is ended. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 09/19/2017 Upon intake, Cheese Puff was hard barking and did not allow handling MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 09/21/2017 During his initial medical examination, Cheese Puff was tense and lunged – a limited exam was performed. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: Cheese Puff remains challenging to handle in the care center – hard barking at strangers and lunging. Because we cannot be certain of the depth of his fear, the behavior department believes Cheese Puff is not an appropriate candidate for public adoption at this time.
RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in shelter in addition to our lack of known history, the behavior department recommends Cheese Puff be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Cheese Puff to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Cheese Puff to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Cheese Puff presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity: Cheese Puff has growled and attempted to lunge when handled in certain areas. It is important to avoid touching Cheese Puff’s paws at this time and being cautious when touching him in other areas as we do not know where he may have other sensitivities. Positive reinforcement, reward based training should be used to pair touch with good things such as food rewards in order to teach Cheese Puff to be more comfortable with this _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Though he has improved during his stay at our care centers, Cheese Puff continues to give all appropriate warning signals when uncomfortable. Due to the consistent behavior displayed in shelter, the behavior department recommends an experienced adult only home until he can acclimate to his new home environment for the behavior to be further assessed. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is advised; force-free, reward based training only is recommended. _X_ Single-pet home/Recommend no dog parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Cheese Puff has shown during playgroup (see GROUPBEHAVIOR SUMMARY), we feel that Cheese Puff should not visit dog parks and be the only resident dog. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Cheese Puff associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.
