07/12/2017 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: None 07/10/17 Intact male, stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 07/12/17 Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is down, body tense, and mouth closed, ears back. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft, jumps up mouths. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand applying light pressure. Squeeze 2: 2. Dog gently places his open mouth over the Assessor’s hand applying light pressure. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Summary: Cheddar shows a fairly low threshold for arousal and quickness to use his mouth, mouthing the assessor’s arm with light pressure. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Cheddar solicits and engages in gentle play with male and female dogs. Cheddar was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. The Behavior Department recommends that Cheddar be placed with dogs that match his gentle play style. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 07/10/17 Upon intake, Cheddar had a loose and wiggly body. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/11/17 During his initial medical examination, Cheddar was tense though tolerated handling. ENERGY LEVEL: We have no history on Cheddar so we cannot be certain of his behavior in a home environment. However, he is a young, enthusiastic, social dog who will need daily mental and physical activity to keep him engaged and exercised. We recommend long-lasting chews, food puzzles, and hide-and-seek games, in additional to physical exercise, to positively direct his energy and enthusiasm. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with the (behaviors outlined below). _X_ No young children (under 5)- Due to Cheddar’s response to some of the SAFER handling items, and becoming mouthy, young children may be intimidated by this behavior. we feel no young children will be most beneficial at this time.
Potential challenges: _X_Mouthiness/Poor bite inhibition- While he applies only light pressure, Cheddar was mouthy throughout the assessment and is quick to put his teeth on skin. This is likely an attention-seeking behavior, but it should be replaced with an alternative behavior as it can frighten people. We recommend never playing with bare hands – always with a toy – and ending play or attention whenever Cheddar puts teeth on skin. He should be rewarded with attention and treats when he stops and/or when he is seeking attention in alternate ways.
