A volunteer writes:

It was not short of a miracle but Cheddar took his first walk yesterday, on Christmas Day.. He is a tiny little thing at 6 months of age and 20  pounds, all scared in his kennel, backing off and attempting to show a tiny sleeve of very white teeth when my lasso approached his head…Tasty bits of turkey jerkies caught his attention and he “stole” them one by one, from his den’s floor. I put toys in his kennel. He was interested and came forward to investigate. Although petrified by his abandonment, confinement and noisy environment, the inquisitiveness of youth pushed Cheddar over his limits and he became more receptive to my leash. The poor little mensch needed lots of encouragement  but he finally (with a little push)  stepped out of his kennel,  in the hallway..Hiding was his first instinct when he saw dogs  and people in the backyard. His peers did interest him , somewhat and he came a little forward when he saw Puggy , the Pug, looking at him, all silly with his tongue hanging..I convinced Cheddar to take a walk all around the grass and by our 4th lap, he was a bit more confident. His kennel being cleaned, we waited a little in the hallway and although wary, Cheddar allowed me to pet his face, head and back. Many baby steps…but steps in the right direction. Baby Cheddar will most likely need your help very soon as so often , with scared dogs, there is progress and regression in their behavior in a shelter environment. They have sensitive souls that need a home stetting, stability and a savvy owner to bring then back on the right path. Cheddar is a very cute little boy, endearing, well made , petite , healthy looking and so well dressed in his milk chocolate coat. I am so counting on his progress with lots of walks, playgroups with his kind and gentle words from staff and volunteers. Will you give Cheddar a chance to start with you, the New Year, safe and loved in a new home? Cheddar is at the Manhattan Care Center, hoping to become your little boy…

A volunteer adds:
Yesterday, baby Cheddar made an almost 360 degrees  turn….for the better .  He made his debuts in playgroups with 2 of his nicest peers, Ivy and Moonstone. It was a bit shaky but it gave him the idea that things might not be as bleak as he thought!!!! Last night, before to leave the care center, I went to wish him good night. To my surprise, Cheddar was not plastered to the back of his den anymore. He was dancing at his door…take me out, take me out…He even tried to escape which I did not allow… I sat at the edge of his kennel, leashed him and started to pet him while talking to him. I love this little boy and had tears in my eyes…He was a winner! His heart was lighter and happier. Hope was looming ….Dreaming of a home sweet home for him is  now possible…Now, let’s find him a hero who will lead him  to great Doghood… Cheddar is at the Manhattan Care Center.
