11/20/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPNOCHILD
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
KNOWN HISTORY: N/A Unaltered, Stray SAFER ASSESSMENT: 11/16/16 Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Chasen appeared distracted during his assessment though displayed no other concerns. PLAYGROUP: Chasen was brought in as a stray so his past behavior around other dogs is unknown. When off leash at the Care Center, Chasen greets the female helper dog with stiff, forward posture and begins chattering immediately. He was sexually motivated with her but did not attempt to mount and was tolerant of her play solicitations. When greeting a novel neutered male, Chasen displays neutral body language. He spends most of his time exploring the pen, occasionally stopping to briefly sniff the other dog.
MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 11/13/16 During his initial medical exam Chasen was barking and allowed limited handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Chasen displays a high activity level in the care center. IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS: During his stay at our care centers, Chasen has displayed a low threshold for arousal which appears increasingly difficult to manage as he is unable to easily recover/refocus. Chasen has been observed to hard bark/hard stare at handlers when any attempts to refocus his attention are made, because of this behavior concern, we advise against a home with children at this time until he can be further assessed in a more stable environment. 11/20 update: This behavior is concerning in such a stressful environment and will make it difficult for Chasen to stay below his arousal threshold on a daily basis. In order to prevent an incident that may put staff or volunteers at risk, the Behavior Department does not feel that Chasen is an ideal candidate for the adoptions room. For safety reasons and for his welfare, placement should be sought as soon as possible. RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (Suitable for an adopter with a previous amount of dog experience) _X_No children (under 13)(See “IN-SHELTER OBSERVATIONS” _X_Basic manners/Poor impulse control (It is recommended that default behaviors such as “Leave it”, “Sit/Stay”, “Down” are reinforced to substitute frustration and teach him to control his impulses instead of simply reacting; proper management is also advised. Force-free, reward based training is recommended.) _X_On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
