Hello, my name is Chase. My animal id is #15799. I am a male white dog at the Brooklyn Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 3 years old.
I came into the shelter as a aco impound on 09-Dec-2017.
Chase is at risk for behavior concerns (New Hope Only determination). He has allowed minimal handling the care center, quickly escalating to warning behaviors (growling, lunging). When Chase is removed from the kennel he displays touch sensitivity and requires a slow approach.

[DVM Intake] DVM Intake Exam Estimated age: 3 years Microchip noted on Intake? n History : confiscated from owner due to overcrowding Subjective: BAR sevreal wounds and puncture on patient Observed Behavior – allowed all handling however was very timid and scared Evidence of Cruelty seen – n Evidence of Trauma seen – n Objective T = P = 126 R = 24 BCS 5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal or ocular discharge noted Oral Exam: wnl PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: both testicles palpable MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted Skin – medium puncture wound to left mandible/cervical area, large lateral scab on right lateral body wall CNS: Mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Rectal: Assessment – Puncture/abscess and intact male Prognosis: good Plan: Start patient on Antibiotics and NSAIDS Temporary waiver due to abscess
DISREGARD
Subjective: BAR. Observed Behavior – Timid on exam Evidence of Cruelty seen – none Evidence of Trauma seen – none Objective P = 80 R = 24 BCS 5/9 EENT: Eyes clear, ears clean, no nasal discharge noted Oral Exam: pink mm, teeth clean, no gingivitis PLN: No enlargements noted H/L: NSR, NMA, CRT < 2, Lungs clear, eupnic ABD: Non painful, no masses palpated U/G: Intact male. WNL MSI: Ambulatory x 4, skin free of parasites, no masses noted — Linear scabbed-over wound on right dorsal thorax (6 inches long)– Left side of face has area of crusting dermatitis and a 2 inch linear scab on ventral cheek. CNS: mentation appropriate – no signs of neurologic abnormalities Assessment: old wounds on face and back (> 10 days) — healing well at this time. No evidence of active abscess at this time. Plan: continue with supportive care and previously prescribed meds (500mg clavamox PO bid for 7 days, 75mg Carprofen PO BID for 5 days). Ok for neuter surgery. Prognosis: Excellent

Summary:: Unable to SAFER due to behavior concerns Chase is difficult to remove from the kennel, snarling and lunging toward the bars – once he settles he is able to be removed though remains cautious, tracking handler’s movement, whale eyed. He has also allowed minimal handling from caretakers in general throughout his stay. Out of concern for his stress levels and his response to restraint, we feel Chase is not a great candidate for a handling assessment at this time.
Summary (1):: Chase was brought in with 5 other large mixed breed dogs reported to have lived together, however no information about their behavior was provided. 12/11: When off leash at the Care Center, Chase very briefly greets the novel female dog with a nervous, tucked posture but mostly avoids further contact, and explores the yard. 12/12: Chase mostly kept to himself when introduced to a calm female dog. He briefly exchanges in sniff then investigates the pens.

ENERGY LEVEL:: Chase displays a low energy level in the care center though this may be due to his fear. We cannot be certain of his behavior in a new home environment though recommend daily mental and physical stimulation as a way to direct his energy and enthusiasm.

Recommendations:: Place with a New Hope partner
Recommendations comments:: Chase has not acclimated well to the kennel environment and has allowed only minimal handling since intake. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and re-evaluate behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
Potential challenges: : Handling/touch sensitivity,Fearful/potential for defensive aggression,On-leash reactivity/barrier frustration
Potential challenges comments:: Handling/touch sensitivity:1. Chase has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him. It is important to always go slow and give Chase the option to walk away from any social interaction. Chase should never be forced to approach anything that he is uncomfortable with or to submit to petting or handling. It should always be Chase’s choice to approach a new person or thing. Chase may do best in an initially calm and quiet home environment and should be given time to acclimate to his new surroundings. Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Chase has shown reactivity towards other humans was noted by the previous owner (lunging, growling). Because this appears to present a challenge outside of the care centers, guidance from a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly advised to assess this behavior and modify/manage as needed. Barrier frustration: At the care center Chase has been observed to show some barrier frustration to human passerby while in the kennel, (lunging towards them, barking and growling). We cannot be certain if this will translate in a new home environment though recommend safe and appropriate management.
