08/14/17 19:53 Basic Information: Charlie is a male large breed dog who was surrendered to ACC due to Charlie having behavior issues in his previous home. Socialization: Around strangers Charlie is friendly, outgoing and plays exuberantly with adults and children. Charlie has lived with children ages 3 through 8 years old, around them he is usually tolerant but can become agitated is bothered too much. Charlie has spent time with other dogs of various sizes and is relaxed and playful around them. Charlie has bitten a stray cat in his neighborhood and will chase cats away. Behavior: Charlie has bitten people and cats. Charlie is not bothered by storms/fireworks but is fearful or loud sounds. If someone touches Charlie will growl/snap/bite if someone touches his food/bowl while he is eating, takes a treat/toys away or disturbs him while he is resting/sleeping. Charlie is friendly when someone pulls/pushes him off of the furniture, holds/restrains him, gives him a bath, or brushes his coat. Charlie is fearful of getting his nails trimmed. Charlie is friendly if an unfamiliar person approaches his family/home. For a New Family to Know: Charlie is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident, and excitable with a high activity level. When at home Charlie will follow around his owner and likes to play with all toys. Charlie was kept indoors only and is house trained. Charlie never has any accidents and will use the bathroom in dirt/gravel. Charlie will cry/whine when let alone at home or in a yard. Charlie has never been crate trained and knows the commands give paw and sit. Charlie likes brisk walks on a leash and pulls very hard on a leash. Charlie will run away when off leash. Intake Behavior: Charlie went up to staff to smell their legs and feet slowly, after some time Charlie was friendly toward staff and allowed them to collar, scan for a microchip and take pictures with no signs of aggression

Resource guarding: Yes Bite history: No, but the victim was scratched by Charlie after she took away a treat that she showed him. Charlie jumped toward the victim and his paw hit her face causing the scratch. Housetrained: Yes Energy level/descriptors: The owner stated Charlie displays a high activity level in the household. Other notes: SAFER ASSESSMENT: 8/23/17 Look:2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions. Sensitivity:2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, his tail is between his legs, body a bit tense with his mouth closed. Tag:2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (need coaxing to approach.) He is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1:3. Dog closes mouth, becomes a bit tense. Squeeze 1&2: 1. Dog does not respond at all. Toy: 1. No interest. Summary: Charlie was nervous and avoid interaction with the handlers. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Charlie engages in gentle play. He becomes uncomfortable with high energy play and will keep his distance. According to Charlie’s previous owner Charlie spent time with other dogs of various sizes and is relaxed and playful around them. The Behavior Department recommends that Charlie be placed in a home with resident dogs that are respectful and match his gentle play style. INTAKE BEHAVIOR 8/14/17: Upon intake Charlie was a bit nervous but after some time he became friendly and allowed all handling. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 8/15/17: During his medical examination, Charlie was trembling with his tail tucked and whale eyes, he was difficult to handle.

ENERGY LEVEL: His previous owner reports a high activity level, which matches what we have seen in the care center. RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_No cats- Charlie bit a cat in the neighborhood and has shown a concerning level toward cats in the care center. He must not be placed into a home with cats or where he may be exposed to cats. _X_Place with a New Hope partner- Due to noted concerns displayed in a home environment, the behavior department recommends Charlie be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Charlie to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Charlie to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Charlie presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding- Charlie is reported to growl/snap and bite over resources. He should be left alone while eating, and should be taught the cue “drop” and other trade up games so Charlie learns that dropping food or having people around while he is eating is rewarding. Behavior modification protocols for food guarding behavior can be found on aspcapro.org _X_Anxiety- Charlie has shown some signs of potential anxiety in the care center, vocalizing (whining, barking) continually through the SAFER and through play sessions outside. This behavior was not reported at intake, and we have no known history on Charlie for this reason, so we cannot be certain whether similar behavior will be seen in a future home environment.

He offers a play bow at the gate before becoming occupied with the muzzle. He attempts to engage in play, with a novel female dog, but eventually becomes preoccupied with the muzzle. 8/26- 8/28: Charlie engaged in gentle play with a group of male and female dogs. He becomes nervous around a high energy mouthy dog, and keeps his distance from him.
