I am a neutered male brown and white boxer and amer bulldog mix. The shelter thinks I am about 3 YEARS old.

I came in the shelter as a RETURN on 09/19/2016 from NY 11691, owner surrender reason stated was BITEPEOPLE.

09/22/2016 Exam Type BEHAVIORPART2 – Medical Rating is 1 – NORMAL , Behavior Rating is NH ONLY, Weight 78.0 LBS.

Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. His ears are back, his tail is down, and he has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, his eyes are averted, and his tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is likely closed for at least a portion of the assessment item. Tag: 1. Follows at end of leash, body soft. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog quickly pulls back his paw. Squeeze 2:1. Dog gently pulls back his paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. He does not place his body between you and the toy. Dod-dog: Charlie displayed stiff body language and immediately froze when greeting a female dog. Due to the behavior displayed, a muzzle was placed on him before he is allowed to enter the pen. Once in the pen, Charlie continues to display stiff body language as he greets and allowed the female dog to greet him. He seems sexually motivated, persistently sniff the female’s genital area and placing his whole head under her. He is able to listen to handler interruptions and explores the pen.

09/19/16 15:21 Basic information Charlie is a 3 year old male brown and white Boxer bull dog mix with no known medical conditions. Owners have had charley for 1 week and are surrendering because of behavior issues. Socialization Charlie lived with children ages 5 and up and was tolerant of them. Charlie did not play with the children but allowed them to pet him. Charlie did not live with cats or other dogs. When passing another dog on the street Charlie would not pay any attention to them. Around strangers Charlie has been both friendly and aggressive ( barking and lunging). Charlie played gently with adults. Charlie has bitten in the last 10 days but did not break skin. Behavior During storms Charlie is afraid and did not want to go outside in the rain at all. Charlie was given a bathe but struggled to get out of the water./ Charlie isn’t bothered when taking toys and treats away from him but owner did not try to touch his food bowl while eating. Charlie isn’t bothered when being held or restrained. Recently When someone unfamiliar approaches the house Charlie will bark growl and lunge at the people. For the new family to know Charlie was described as mellow and aloof at first with a low activity level. When home with Charlie he would follow you around seeking attention. Charlie didn’t play much but would sometimes play fetch with a ball or squeaky toys. Charlie ate science diet dry food mixed with Purina wet food. Charlie is house trained but has not been left in the house loose alone. Charlie was crate trained and did well in a crate for up to 10 hours. Charlie knows the command sit. Charlie played in the yard on the leash for exercise and pulls lightly on the leash. Charlie is use to going t the bathroom on grass. Previous owner believes Charlie would do well in a home without children. Behavior during intake During intake Charlie was quiet and curious. He walked into the kennel with no problem and was well behaved in the kennel.

A volunteer writes: Remember the date you went on because you thought the other person was so awesome looking? And then when that person wowed you with their good manners you knew you had gold? That’s how I felt about Charlie! A big boy in his kennel he actually bowed his head to make it easy for me to leash him, stepped out gently and out we go. He’s likely housetrained, and is so great on leash it gave me a chance to focus on his gorgeous coat and full figured physique. Charlie has clearly been well cared for before joining us as a ‘stray’, his nails are trimmed, his coat lush and soft, and his weight perfect for his size and breed. When I sat down in the park he promptly sat in front of me and put his big head on my lap for some petting. If I stopped he gave me a little nudge to remind me about “idle hands are the devil’s workshop’ or some such saying….as if I needed reminding! Ignoring everything going on in the park, other critters, people, kids, scooters, bikes, carriages, you name it, it was there, Charlie is a perfect gentleman and so easy to be with. He takes treats gently, softly wags his nubby tail and sits to wait for more. Back in the building he sat in front of the door as I fumbled for access…..it seems he’s been trained well. Our behavior assessors agree that he’s awesome and think that he’ll be a good fit in a home with average dog experience. 09/22/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY

Charlie previously lived with adults and children ages 5 and up. The owner stated Charlie wouldn’t play with the children but allowed them to pet him, and with strangers Charlie can be friendly or reactive and lunge/growl at them. The owner mentioned recently when someone unfamiliar approaches the house Charlie will bark growl and lunge at them. The owner describes Charlie as mellow and aloof at first with a low activity level. It was reported by the owner Charlie is house trained and crate trained and does well for up to 10 hours. . According to the owner Charlie has a previous bite history and attempted to bite 3 different people. After Charlie started to clear up from being sick his behavior changed completely. Owner stated that before Friday he was very sweet affectionate mushy and mellow. He started to get more energy and he began snapping randomly at the family and strangers. The 1st incident happened when the owner was lying on the couch with Charlie with his head in her lap. Charlie was being pet and all of a sudden turned his head and bit her elbow. The 2nd incident the 5 year was lying next to Charlie leaning on him while petting him and he turned and bit her arm. The 3rd incident Charlie was outside when the neighbor (who he had interacted with already) came up to Charlie bent down and let him sniff his hand. Charlie smelled him and when the Neighbor went to go pet him Charlie lunged and hit him in the mouth with his mouth and loosened his tooth. At intake it was reported Charlie was quiet and curious, he walked into the kennel with no issues. During SAFER Charlie came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, he was friendly and social towards the assessor. He allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Charlie joins the game during the tag interaction, and during the resources portion of the assessment Charlie was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Due to some concerns stated from the previous owner, the behavior department feels that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time.

Charlie was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around other dogs is unknown. During Charlie’s initially stay at the Care Center, Charlie greeted and sniffed the female greeter’s rear with body a bit tense, raised hackles, and “vibrating” fast tail. When he approaches and sniffs her face, he immediately freezes. Charlie does not pursue further. The Behavior Department believes that Charlie would be most comfortable as the only resident dog in a new home. 9/20: Charlie displayed stiff body language and immediately froze when greeting a female dog.
