04/24/2017 PET PROFILE MEMO
04/24/17 15:11 Basic Info: Chappy A1109917 is a female white & tan AMPBT perhaps Boxer or American Bulldog mix that was given to the owner a month ago from the previous owner and is being surrendered due to Chappy being too strong. She was last seen by a veterinarian in 2016 and currently has no known health issues/injuries. Socialization: Around strangers Chappy barks at them (the owner doesn’t know if it’s to play or if she’s protecting the owner/home). Chappy hasn’t lived with/been around other animals or children but was gentle, exuberant, relaxed, playful with the adult and two older teens that have visited the home. Chappy has never bitten/scratched any person or animal. Behavior: The following hasn’t been done to know Chappy’s behavior: having her food/food bowl, toys/treats touched/moved, being moved off of furniture, being brushed, having her nails trimmed or being disturbed while sleeping/resting. For bath time Chappy will jump out of the tub. If someone approaches the home/owner Chappy will bark until they walk away or leave. For A New Family to Know: Chappy is described as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident & excitable with a medium-high activity level. The owner likes how smart and “sensible” she is. Chappy enjoys resting, playing, squeaky, ball, rope & stuffed toys also games of fetch, chase & tug. Chappy is an indoor only dog that sleeps on a dog bed & eats dry Pedigree 2-3x a day. When left home alone Chappy is well behaved, her known commands are “sit” “stay” “come” (with a come hand movement) & “go” (with a “shoo”/go hand movement). Chappy has access to a yard; she’ll bark when she wants to be let out and will “knock” on the door or window to be let in. If it’s less than 50 degrees she doesn’t like to be out for long; she’ll go out, do her business then run back inside. Intake Behavior: Chappy had a loose, wiggly body and allowed all handling. She allowed to be scanned (-), collared and taken pictures of; Chappy even laid across my lap as I collared her. Chappy then walked alongside me to her kennel where she hopped in when asked.

Dog jumps on the Assessor, consistently rubs her shoulder on the Assessor, and will not allow Assessor to conduct the assessment. Sensitivity:1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag:1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1& 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy: 3. Dog takes toy away, keeps a firm hold. Her body is tense. Summary: Chappy was friendly and energetic towards the assessor. PLAYGROUP: When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Chappy has not yet been comfortable socializing with male and female dogs. She chooses to keep to herself when in a group of calm dogs. According to Chappy’s previous guardian, Chappy has not been around other dogs. The Behavior Department believes that Chappy would be comfortable as the only resident dog. If Chappy is to be placed in home with a resident dog, the resident dog should be tolerant and polite and all initial introductions should be conduct slowly and under supervision. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 4/25/17: During her medical examination, Chappy was friendly and affectionate, she allowed all handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Chappy displayed high energy and movement throughout assessment.
RECOMMENDATIONS: Experience (suitable for an adopter with some previous dog experience, especially with behaviors outlined below) _X_No young children (under 5): Due to potential toy guarding behavior. Chappy gave an appropriate warning of her discomfort (became tense) but we feel that young children may not know to respect this warning. Older, dog savvy children can be considered as long as the adults feel confident that Chappy can be left alone while playing so she does not need to escalate from being tense. Behavior modification for toy guarding behavior can be found at aspcapro.org. _x_Recommend no dog parks: Due to Chappy’s discomfort around other dogs, the Behavior Department recommends that she be socialized around other dogs in a more controlled setting. Potential challenges: _X_Resource guarding: Chappy is reported to become tense with toy resources. It is important to leave Chappy alone while she is playing and never to take anything directly from her mouth. When she is asked to drop something she should be traded for an item of equal or higher value, in order to reward Chappy for relinquishing the item she has.
