07/01/17 18:10 Chapo is a 2 year old large Black and white dog who was surrendered to the ACC due to the fact he does not have time to take care of him any longer. The owner stated that he got Chapo from his cousin and he has no known medical issues. Owner stated that when around strangers Chapo is fearful and will bark and growl. Chapo has been around children ages 4 and 9 years and he is relaxed and playful. When playing with children and adults Chapo is exuberant. Chapo has not lived in the home with other dogs due to the fact the owner stated that he is aggressive with other dogs. Chapo has not spent time around cats so it is unknown how he will react. Owner stated that Chapo has never bitten a person or another animal. During fireworks and thunder storms Chapo isn’t bothered. Chapo is friendly if someone touches his food treats or toys. She isn’t bothered if he is restrained pushed off the couch or disturbed while he sleeps. Chapo is afraid of water. He has never had his nails trimmed so it is unknown how he will react. When someone unfamiliar approaches his house or family member he will bark and growl. Owner described Chapo as friendly affectionate, playful and excitable with a high energy level. Chapo loves to play with ropes. When at home with his owner he likes to be in the same room. Chapo likes to play fetch and tug. He has been kept indoors only and eats both wet and dry food. Chapo is very much house broken and never has accidents. When using the bathroom he will go on the grass or cement. When left alone in the house or the yard he is well behaved. Chapo has been crated and does well for up to 8 hours. Chapo knows the sit come and down commands. Chapo is used to brisk walks on the leash when off the leash he may run away.

When attempting to engage in interaction with Chapo, he freezes, whale eyes and growls at the assessor. Out of concern for his stress level, a handling assessment will not be performed at this time. PLAYGROUP: When off leash at the Care Center, Chapo is very nervous when interacting with calm male and female dogs, but occasionally greets them briefly. Chapo’s owner reported that he does not get along with other dogs. The Behavior Department believes that Chapo would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home, however he may be placed with polite resident dogs pending slow introductions that are supervised. MEDICAL BEHAVIOR: 07/02/17 During his initial medical examination, Chapo was tense though tolerated handling. ENERGY LEVEL: Chapo is reported to have a high energy level though he remains fearful in shelter and has only displayed a low activity level. We recommend daily mental and physical stimulation after a period of decompression once Chapo has acclimated to his home environment.

RECOMMENDATIONS: New Hope Only _X_No children (under 13) _X_Recommend no dog parks: Due to Chapo’s nervousness when socializing, the Behavior Department recommends that Chapo initially only be socialized in a more controlled setting. _X_Place with a New Hope partner: Due to all noted concerns displayed in a home environment and in shelter, the behavior department recommends Chapo be placed with a New Hope placement partner who is able to provide an experienced adult-only foster home. A period of decompression is recommended to allow Chapo to acclimate comfortably to his new environment; force-free, reward based training only is advised when introducing Chapo to new and unfamiliar situations. Consultation with a professional trainer/behaviorist is highly recommended for guidance to safely manage/modify any behavior Chapo presents with outside of the care centers. Potential challenges: _X_Handling/touch sensitivity _X_Fearful/potential for defensive aggression: Chapo has been observed to display fearful behavior during his stay at our care centers, at times avoiding interaction and shying away from direct touch. Chapo startles easily and is made uncomfortable by loud noises and sudden movement. He displays proper warning signals as well as increasing distance from anything that may present a threat. We cannot be certain if any other behavior is suppressed as a result of his environment. A period of decompression is advised before introduction or exposure to new and unfamiliar situations. Force-free, reward based training is advised.

When off leash at the Care Center, Chapo is very nervous when interacting with calm male and female dogs, but occasionally greets them briefly. Chapo’s owner reported that he does not get along with other dogs. The Behavior Department believes that Chapo would be most comfortable as the only dog in the home, however he may be placed with polite resident dogs pending slow introductions that are supervised. 7/2: Chapo makes eye contact with the female helper dog, lip licks and then avoids her for the majority of the session. Once we close the gates at the end, Chapo does approach her and briefly sniff and licks her muzzle. 7/3: Chapo maintains his severe nervousness around a male dog today. He briefly sniffs the other dog, then begins to lip lick and scurry away. As the session continues he begins to hyper-salivate. 7/5: Chapo is slightly more social towards the end of his playgroup sessions, slowly leaning forward to sniff the other dog.
