03/21/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: I was about to leave the care center when I spotted one, two, three dogs (Neville, Chante and Lucky) that seemed to be a carbon copy of each other. They had just arrived and were so scared. I picked the bravest of the three, Chante. I introduced myself and told her that I was a volunteer sent to make her feel better. She was hesitant but accepted my leash and off to the yard we went. Chante is a smallish girl who appears quite healthy, is dressed in a shiny ebony coat and has been a mother once upon a time. She is very wary and is not too sure if I am a foe or a friend. This place is not hers. She does quickly her business and stays put, laying flat on the ground. I sit next to her. She does not avoid my eyes, she puts up with my caresses and my talks. In her distress, she still has an eye for the pigeons and would not mind chasing them. Time for a little walk around the block. Chante is a good walker, she even sits at the light upon command. Other dogs are met, she seems fine with them. The trio, owned since tender puppy hood, was surrendered as the owner’s wife is expecting. She does not want dogs in the house. Chante comes with excellent recommendations, though. Affectionate and protective, well mannered, housetrained, good with other dogs… she does not like cats, though. We need to see a little bit more of Chante and her two housemates. Let’ s make a date… I am looking forward to see a smile on her face. Chante is at the Manhattan Care Center. Another volunteer adds: Three year old Chante was so scared when she came in. I am so proud of her, though as she has made all efforts to come out of her shell. Indeed, Chante can be found in our adoption quarters, often taken out by volunteers and coming now , all by herself, to her door to salute her visitors. She walks so much better too, not anymore , running, aimlessly but more strolling, like a pet would do. She is still shy but accepts caresses without ducking or rolling on her side…She will sit for treats and even shows some interest in a tennis ball. Chante is a brave little girl who has come a long way. Will you open your home and heart to her?
03/15/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Chante walks with a low fearful body language on leash. She was shy but friendly during the assessment – low body, but trying to stay close. Chante was shy during handling with a fearful body language. She was distracted, focused on objects in the room rather than the handler during the tag test. Chante was not interested in toys. Chante was surrender to us. According to her previous owner Chante is playful, excitable affectionate, shy, anxious and friendly. Around children Chante is relaxed and playful and when he plays she is exuberant but gentle. Around other dogs Bucky is also relaxed and playful and when she plays she is exuberant. Around cats Bucky is uncomfortable; she barks and lunges at them. Chante was friendly when his previous owner touched her food bowl, treat, toy while eating or playing” The behavior department feels that he may do best with an experienced adopter. Chante is somewhat fearful and needs time to warm up to the handler. We cannot be certain if behavior may be suppressed as a result of the shelter environment. Please note that behavior may change when Chante is more comfortable and settled in a home environment. Look: 2. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her body posture is stiff and fearful; her tail is low and not moving. She allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 2. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, shy body language , mouth closed, lip long, ears likely back, may lip lick. Tag: 2. Dog is not fearful, but is unresponsive to the Assessor, and approaches the Assessor at the end of the game (may need coaxing to approach.) she is focused on stimuli other than the Assessor. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Squeeze 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw. Toy 1. No interest.
03/15/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Chante is uncomfortable interacting with dogs off leash while at the care center. She typically sits in one spot, trembling, while the helper dog sniffs her. Her owner reports that around other dogs in the home (she lived with two males) Chante is relaxed and playful and when she plays she is exuberant. She, however, has become increasingly reactive during her stay, lunging and barking when walking past other dogs. The behavior department recommends a pre-adoption interaction before placing Chante into a home with other dogs as well as allowing her time to acclimate to her new surroundings before introducing her to any resident dogs. When off leash with other dogs, Chante offers a small wag when approached by the greeter but appears otherwise tense and stressed in the yard environment. She seeks an exit from the yard. 3/16 update: Chante avoids the other dog and sits toward the pen exit. 3/22 update: Chante is anxious in the yard, but briefly approaches to sniff a calm male dog. 3/24 update: Chante is aroused in the yard. She vocalizes when in the pen alone and when dogs approach she stiffens, lunges, barks and growls. She is not introduced this time.
